GTO's are sweet! no hate here, damn quick! Im impressed by them! (I saw one destroy my friends heavily modded EVO, always brings a smile to my face when he loses*) Well.. I give props to all sports cars period, never underestimate any of them, and if I lose then I give props.
Sry about the death, get a clutch try again, maybe it will be closer but if his driving improves, I cant promise a victory.... unless you swap a 20b O_O

I guess I'm of the mind that sports car power should come in sports cars, not just in any car that you want to put a motor into. I never said the motor doesn't work, because it obviously works quite well, but why the hell do you need one in a station wagon? And I shouldn't have said domestics, I should have said domestic car manufacturers. The GTO is a very respectable car and has lots of good features, but I still don't consider it a sports car. I'd equate it to maybe an IS300 or a Mercedes sedan of some sort, that while it has the power, it still isn't really a car that's made for the track. And I guess that's the problem. I guess I just feel threatened by the fact that a soccer mom or dad at the light next to me could possibly blow me away in their sedan. I mean I'm supposed to be driving a legend and they can carry 2 kids and their groceries but yet still outrun me in the 1/4.
It just ain't fair I tells ya.

I guess I don't see what your interpretation of a "sports car" is. Remember, even the FD had rear seats in Japan. The Rx8 has 4 doors! Are Evo's sports cars? Some think not, but they handle like one. Is a DeLorean a sports car? It's low, two doored, gull-winged, rear engined...but it was slow as hell and couldn't handle. How about a big Mercedes E55 AMG? That's a big German 4 door saloon, but it can run a mid 12 second 1/4 mile stock. What about the Brabus Rocket? That's based on a 4 door Mercedes CLS class. It has 730HP and a twin turbo V12! Top speed of 217mph, and that's electronically limited!
So what makes a sports car? Besides, now we're just getting into names. I feel like the GTO is a sporty car...it handles decently well and can accelerate nicely. Has a very good top end speed (~160ish). Has RWD. Has two doors. It may not be a Corvette, but it has the same engine and is 1/2 the price. Pulled a .85g on the skidpad...I know the FD will do a .97g, but still.... .85g isn't too shabby for a car of its height (6.5" taller than an FD), weight (1200lbs heavier than an FD), and size (21.3" longer than an FD). It also runs the 1/4 almost a full second faster than a stock FD (14.0 seconds compared to 13.1). Like I said...that's not too far from sporty, IMO
In the end, call it a sports car, call it a Grand Am...I couldn't care less. It's still fast and fun, and that's all that matters.

If you're looking at gearing limitations, then put a 1.0 rear end in. You could hit like 700 dude!!!

Respecognize!
we test drove an 04' auto when my buddy was looking for a new car. talk about burnout machine. I did like the "mph" -> "km/h" thing. AND the little car slidding around thing on the gauge cluster screen when you turn traction control off.
turns out he ended getting a 67 GTO...

I am not a fan of the Magnum either (guessing this is what you're talking about). I don't see the point of it...it's uncomfortable and it's impossible to see out of. The interior feels really cheap, too.
Both of those cars are sub-300hp saloons (depending on which MB)...this is a 400hp coupe. And what track are you talking about, anyway? There are GTOs running in the Grand Am Cup series, Grand Am Rolex GT series, D1 series (last year - Rhys), Speed World Challenge GT series, NHRA, and the Holden Monaro is a huge car in the Australian V8 Supercar series.

A sports car, my definition anyway, is a car that has power and handling. That's it. It's how much of both of those is what sets a "sports cars" apart from "sports sedans", "sports coupes", or "sports import". Where do you draw the line for that? I'm not really sure. A .85 on the skidpad puts you in the company of cars such as the Chevy Montecarlo (.83), Acura TSX (.85), Volkswagon Passat Wagon (.83), all of which are nice in their own regard, but not cars I would consider as "sports cars". For you to gain that title, I'd imagine you'd be in the realm of cars such as the Lotus Elise (.99g and 0-60:4.9sec), Corvette C5 (.92g and 0-60:4.9sec), and of course our venerable FD3S (.99g and 0-60:5.0sec). That's my take on what makes a "sports car", of course your mileage may vary.

^^I think you make a very good arguement and i agree with you. But i would definitley give the GTO its props though being that it is a well-price 400hp straight-line beast. It's the epitemy of what American car manufacturers are doing to try and stay alive. Now if they would just get everything else right (i.e handling problems, value depreciation, interior styling and creature comforts) it would be nice. I dont know if i ever really got what the purpose of the GTO and what it was meant to be.. was it labeled as a sports car officially?

A sports car, my definition anyway, is a car that has power and handling.
And it's labeled by GM as a "2 door sport coupe"

I really don't know what the hell Pontiac's problem is... not every car the make needs to look like a damn Grand Am. I like the interior and the performance but the exterior styling is awful. It's like they looked back at the old GTO and said... nah, we'll just make a new car and give it the same name... no one will notice.

I give big props to anyone who can hang, soccer moms included.
I love the fact that hp is back in style, it raises the bar for all of us, as well as the manufactures of whatever it is you happen to think is a sport car.
If you get beat by a wagon dont hate, see the reality and turn up your game!

A GTO is no more a sports car then a Charger. They might be considered muscle cars or maybe sports sedans, but they are not a sports car. Even the coupe isn't really a coupe due to the dimensions of the back seats, it's a two door saloon. The BMW M5 is a far more potent sports sedan, but even it is called a "sports sedan" and they make no illusions of being a sports car.
I don't like the GTOs much. It's not because of the fact that I hate American cars, but rather because it just looks like a Grand AM with a Holden touch... and I don't like the Grand Prix/Grand AM look.

Sports have more then just the 100 meter dash.... just gotta wait until the corner to see which ones an actual sports car.
