This dude in a 1991 J-spec MR2 Turbo wants to race my FD
As far as i know he has the J-spec motor with NGK wires and exhaust. He claims he runs high 13's, i'm not really believing him. I have NGK plugs and wires. I'm thinking that the outcome will be me on top but not sure. I know he will rape me off the line but what do you guys think. Me or him?

Spark plugs and wires don't mean anything in the outcome of this race. You will beat him, and he won't necessarily "rape" you off the line. You may be quite surprised how hard you'll real him and pass him.

Know if's it a gen 2 or gen 3 motor? There's only a 20 hp difference between both (225/245), but both stock are better than the USspec engine .
As for from a stop, tires and experience are handy. My friend runs constant 13.5's on his USspec mr2 with an intake and those $20 MBC at 14 psi , netting 1.7-1.8 sixty foots

He said that it is 225 base hp and my FD is all stock, i dont know why he said that he ran a high 13, stock FD is low 14. I'm thinking he is putting down a little over 200 whp. I know that plugs and wires do nothing for performance. If he is running high 13's then he is not telling me everything that he has otherwise i would think it is mid 14's

Sorry its so late but i was out. I will never under estimate a MR-2 again. Those ******* are fast. I found out a little more about the car. It has Apexi Filter, Catback, and J-spec with turbo. He said that he ran a 8.6 1/8 mile.
We line up and take off, this is the first race i have ever done from a stop so i was unexpierenced and i spun like crazy. He came back and we lined up again and we took off, this time i bogg down in first, i figured he wouldnt go past me, he did. I switched to 2nd and stayed with him, then 3rd and by that time i didnt have enough room to catch up and he beat me. About a car and a half, he ****** threw a fireball switchin into 3rd.
I am already expecting some of you to talk **** but thats fine, i will just go practice some more launches and race his *** again. People in my town only race from a roll, i havent lost yet from a roll, except that supercharged mustang.

Damn mid-engine cars, he hardly spun at all off the line. He said that he tied with a SVT Lightning. I figure if we race from a roll i will beat him, i dont like racing from a stop because my car is all stock and i already know that these cars were built with a poor driveshaft. Maybe a launch kit will be on my list of things to get.

I'll go ahead and post another race i had last night too. Another loss but oh well.
It was a 99 35th Ann. Mustang GT 4.6L. He had a $700 exhaust and complete K&N Intake.
We did a 1st gear 20 mph roll. We hit the line and take off, he instantly goes about a car on me, i switch into 2nd and it stays the same, THEN i hit 3rd and instantly jump right up next to his door. Then we hit the end of the 1/4 and he beat me my half a car if that. I was pretty happy with that, these cars are really fast from a roll. The kid in the MR2 said racing from a roll isnt a real race. To me i think a race from a roll shows what a car can do and a race from a stop shows what the driver can do. Correct me if i'm wrong by saying that.

Being a mid-ship driver myself (ducks head), I expected that outcome. Both cars are close to the same weight , maybe only a 10-15 hp difference , but his engine is sitting on the rear wheels , with less drivetrain loss.
IMO, because of those 3 things , if both cars were modded out , the rx7 would need a tad bit more HP than the mr2 to beat it , due to the fact that the MR can put lay it down to the wheels (drivetrain) without any spinning , from a roll or stop

Your telling me, when the person flagged us he was gone, spun like 2 ft maybe. I want to go from a roll so i'll see if i can talk him into that and do a 1st gear roll. He says his 1st and 2nd gears are the quickest.

I think our gears are pretty short..
1st - 35
2nd - 60
3rd - 95
Even tho the CT26 turbo is a poop turbo past 15 psi, it's pretty damn quick for a stock turbo, so from a roll i'd say it's a coin toss, so do it and find out!
I drove my brothers FD (bonestock!bought it 2 weeks ago! 8k! ) , i think i topped out 2nd it was above 60 ? cant remember i'll drive it in the morning and try some stuff.
I also raced him when he first got it, mr2 had just a intake and MBC set at 15 psi on the USspec engine ,hardtop (rare jdm-bling yo jk), me also being the better driver , I pretty much had him from the dig and kept pulling to about 3-4 cars.
Nonetheless, both cars are badass in their own special way

I have to say, if you lost to a 99GT with lite mods, then your car is pretty damn slow. Go and have a compression check or something, because an FD should DESTROY a pretty much stock 4.6L.
Don't feel too bad about the MR2. They are a very good match for a stock FD. There is a 800 (yes 800) HP one around here just terrorizing the Supercharged Vipers ans Supercharged ZO6's around here..
