A chance run in with an FD !!

Hey guys, I finally got the chance to run against a later model RX-7 - and man was it unexpected. I drive a 95 VR4 with a stillen downpipe, MBC@14.5 and intake. On to the story...
I was coming up Jackson St. in Hayward around midnight (east bay, CA, for those who aren't familiar). I had just gotten off of work and there was hardly anyone out since it was a sunday night. I suddenly see someone pull onto jackson with a small shiny car. You know when a car shines at night, its gotta be something cool. Anyways, I hear a loud exhaust screaming towards me, and Im thinking holy **** - what is that?!
He gets next to me and its a shiny red RX7. I wsa kind of cruising along and he caught me off guard. We catch a light and I see him rolling back and forth, then he throws a huge rev. LOL! Im game. I tach her hup to about 4500rpm and wait for the crosslight. I can hear him bouncing his revs Im guessing between 2-3000. Light turns green, and I floor it till it hits 5500 while letting the clutch go real quick. Im thrown back and through first in the quickness. I look back and hes a good 2.5 cars behind me. I hit second and hes still there. Wind out second and hit third and hes creeping slightly but not much. Ride third till almost redline (105mph) and hes a little less than 2 cars back.
I brake gently and he screams by. We meet at a later light and he just gave me a thumbs up and turned away. I dont know what his mods were, but he had an exhaust for sure. It was a fun race, and I can now check one off the list of cars that Ive always wanted to run against. Keep it safe guys! Later.

you will hear some **** over this because most all FD owners on this forum are quite adamate that their cars can't lose. your car is AWD so i believe you got the jump off the line and could pull but it would have been a close race, his car had to have been fairly stock for him to lose though.

good run though.

nice kill.
Having some good low end torque and AWD, the vr4 will at the least will put a good 1-2 cars against most cars from a stop. But from a roll, those shitty 9b's and 330 injectors aren't helping ya too much are they . Your a step above stock so slap on a pair of 13t's and 550s ! your a 3si member right?

nonetheless, both cars are awesome!

Nice kill man. I am very curious about the mods of the 7. I have never ran a vr4 so i can't really comment on how i think the outcome should have been. But it sounds like you have a pretty stout ride and you know how to drive it. But i hope the experience doesn't give you the wrong idea about a 3rd gens performance...

Stock for stock they aren't too far off speed wise. Modded VR4's are slugs though.

Stop being dicks guys. Yes there heavy, but there is no doubt in the world that they are quick. The 7 can lose accept it, this is coming from the biggest rotary fan in the universe. And I do agree that it had to be stock for you to do what you did, but still.....you beat it....doesn't matter.

let the guy have his moment in the sun...i will however agree with pointing out that this particular FD might have been stock, sllightly modded or ailing. Dont think were all like that!
I've never run a VR4 or the regular 3kgt for that matter. You dont really see those modded out up here. theres a ton of them but mainly drive by middle aged women or pretty boy preppies. Nice looking car but way too heavy!

Did you not read where he said it had an exhaust? That was one of the main points in his post.

Well...I've always figured it was a driver's race stock for stock. Modded? Yea, it'd be a different story probably in the favor of the 7. BUT, at the same time, 13t's with supporting mods and a good driver could net me mid 11's - Thats about 2g in mods (not too shabby) That would be a tough ride to beat on the street. I almost bought an FD myself before the VR4, its just that I found a better deal on the VR4 and was having a hard time finding an FD that wasn't close to needing a new motor. I HATE my car's third gear, but first and second have enough ***** to pull a bit on most cars. Later.

Good kill, don't worry, some of the people here need to get over themselves and realize that FDs do not automatically own everything on the road.

This guy took the FD on the launch (to be expected) and the FD was slowly gaining back some ground by 100 mph. Sounds pretty realistic to me for a lightly modded FD and lightly modded VR4.

Call me a pessimist, but there is no doubt in my mind "VR4Power" signed up and created this post to simply gloat over his win and perhaps cause trouble. He's just doing a really good job playing it off as a "cool guy".

Stock for stock, these cars are nearly the same in the 1/4 given equal drivers. On the street from a dead stop, the vr4 with its awd will have a HUGE advantage. From a roll, the drivetrain loss and weight will hurt the vr4.

I totally believe this story. The race was all in the vr4's advantage. On an unpreppred street, street tires and from a dead stop. Plus, he cut the race just about the point where the 7 would most definately made up groud. Given the guys mods (DP, mbc and whatever else he said) he could be touching high 12's in the 1/4 (it doesn't take much).

Good kill. It looks like the 7 played your game and got burnt. Just don't get cocky and start racing every 7 thinking they are an easy kill. And especially don't try one from a roll.

I have owned a vr4 took it from stock to a 11.8 car, your claim of 2-2.5k in mods is far off my friend. This seams like another forum troll to me. a stock fd can run into the low-middle 13s with a good driver. When you say a loud exhaust that really says nothing as all rx7s with an exhaust are loud *with the exception of the stock styled exhaust from Racing beat, pfs and even they are decent* even the slugomatic fd's were pulling good 14s. This guy either wasnt racing.. perhaps still breaking his motor in and not going past 4-5k, has a really bad boost leak, blown turbos, dead motor or your lying

on the note about dead dig racing.. the first 60ft is the only thing that awd is good for really.. and a good driver can beat a vr4 out of the hole easy.

Mods have gotten cheaper since you had yours

13t's can be had for about $600 a pair (modded to fit the vr4) and have put out about 500awhp. Throw in some decent injectors, fuel management, pump and a clutch, and you are looking at about $2500-$3000. Mind you, at that point the i/c should be done as the stock one will be choked up. Though, I do agree that to do make a vr4 into an 11 sec car PROPERLY and with some sort of reliability takes much more then $2500....hell, make that more then $5000.

And stock vr4's have run 13.0X to 13.5. Whats your point? They are near equal cars in the 1/4. However, most vr4's AND fd's run mid-high 13's (stock). Hell, I ran high 13's and that was with horrible spark blow out in 1st and 2nd in my old stealth TT.

And yes, awd is great for the 60'. And on a prepped track with drag radials, alot of cars car out launch an awd car. But an awd car on the street where the pavement isn't as good, and tires aren't as sticky, it will have a HUGE advantage over 99% of all other cars.

the roll is what you had in favor of you, a VR4 all wheel drive will get you from the launch and from the story he managed to hold him off from that point. those that call BS need to pull their heads out of their asses, VR4s stock or even lightly modded are very quick but theyonly have so much potential.
