Absolutly mutulated a Buick Grand National

Ok now before you go one about a cop setting a bad example just remember we do get to have a little fun don't we?

Ok ok on with the kill. Was on my way down to pick up my kid this evening making my way through the friday traffic when I came up behind a very nice 1987 Buick Grand National and I mean this thing was sweet. We started on the stoplight roll when I got a little frustrated with how slow he was accelerating especially for a car of this type so I shifted to the left lane and poured on the coals. Wouldn't you know it he started pouring on the boost as well and I heard him spool up as he pulled his shifter to hold first. I went for 2nd at 7800 and cut loose on the power to gain a grip but poured on again and pulled away from the "national. He hit 3rd by this time and we were on the way to the century mark with him right at my bumper. Seeing no traffic for another 3/4 mile I held 4th and went for the redline again and noticed he was loosing steam but still had his foot nailed. I max'd out at 125 and let off the gas and he started gaining ground by this point. Well we made it to the ramp for US-169 south and he was going my way! Cleared several stoplights in good time to make it to the highway-81 stoplight, a long red that is the last light before the real freeway... Im watching the turnlane lights and bringing the motor to 4500 holding the spool-up and soon as the light turned green I had one of my best street launches with the Buick laying alot of rubber, my tires bit the ground and by the time 2nd came for me I cleared the railroad tracks and layed on the gusto leaving the 'National way the hell behind. He was a good 100 feet behind me the entire time as we pulled to the century mark again only having to let off coming up on traffic at 2 times it's speed. Have to say he was a very good looser in giving me a solid thumbs-up as we returned to "normal" driving speeds.
I was driving a 87 FC turbo-II with hollowed out cat, pressure reg along with boost control and 3" downpipe. Have no idea what my RW horsepower is but sure feels damn strong!

A cop havin' fun

(edited because it was a Grand National NOT GNX, no side louvers)

Launching hard enough to max out the front suspension is all it takes to get the front tires off the ground, also know as torque. maybe saying they would lift the front tires off the ground would have been a better choice of words.

So now back to the kill

Even a hopped up GN is not going to pull the front off the ground simply because that THM200R4 would give out before the thing had a chance.
Those cars are QUICK but a little lazy off the starting line, they pick up like hell once they start moving believe me! Remember its a high horsepower granny car with a trunk that sleeps a family of 4 and super squishy seats.

Now what gets me is how the hell GM ever got that 231 V6 to stay together under power levels like that I mean in the 2bbl form they would literally blow up on fast idle during the morning start-up. I remember working as a kid for Johns Auto Parts and all the 80's GM cars with that 231 and the holes in the blocks. I was a yard goat and got to see them all and many didnt even make it to 100K miles! Must have been that Roger Smith unubtanium epoxy coated rods that were used. Remember Smith was a former bean counter turned president of GM back in those days and almost bankrupted the company... Sad loss I know.

Anyway we've started the process of pulling the motor out of the car now, unfortunatly it also has alot of backwoods repair work done to the engine harness and several of the butt connectors have broken loose and I have to decipher the wiring now.. Should be interesting.

Dude that isnt the half of it. I knew the car was warmed over some because of the downpipe and some other goodies but my experience is limited in aftermarket parts. I guess I shouldn't expect everyone to have the same wiring experience and standards as I do having wired squad cars from the ground up.

What I find really funny is every once in a while I will see a Honda wanna-be on the side of the road because his main fuse blew or worse thanks to the ****-poor wiring of his mega kilowatt thumpbox that was running on #18 lampcord through a drilled hole in the firewall and no insulating grommet, no fuses and burn marks on the interior. I do however carry an assortment of those plug type fuses with me just to help them out. We have them by the hundreds at the station because when squads are wired the fuses are upgraded. If the kid is nice and asks I will try to get him going again as I know what its like to be on the ankle express. Guess Im strange but cant help it

Going to post my harness questions in 2nd generation forum now
