How did everyone get started?

I fell in love with my Rx-7 way back in the 90's when my dad worked for mazda. Then i saw it in Initial D and i really really wanted one. Now, after much deliberation and patience i have bought my first Rex and couldn't be any happier!!! It's exactly what i wanted! A 1990 White GXL. Sure it's no FC3s but i can't wait to start playing with it....and when the engine blows....time for a swap!!

But i ramble. I just wanted to know if you anyone drifts in here, how did you get started? did you read about techniques or were you taught? let me know. Pm me if you'd like.

Craig

Learn your car's turning ability at normal speed, grip-wise, then once you've got that down, do the same turn at the same speed, and depending on what feels best to you, either heel-toe (hit brake hard to make front of car heavy and floor the accelerator the brake the tires loose) inertia drift (steer out of the turn to make the outside of the car light and then countersteer fast and floor it) or downshift into a gear and drop the clutch at 4k-5k and ride that bonus torque. I don't use the handbrake, because I feel like it's cheating, but that's personal preference. I would practice with some rubber cones in an empty parking lot, because one curb will ruin your day, and you can expect some seriously mixed results if you have an open-diff. Be safe and don't try to do a 180 degree drift in front of someone's grandma when she's going to Walmart for her heart medicine, keep it off the streets.

Started in drifting, hmmmm...
Met a friend of my cuzin's in '96 named Daijiro who had a black zenki S14. nothing fancy: springs, tokico illuminas, Kaaz 2way lsd with the regular engine bolt ons. Car was gutted with cobra racing seats. we had gone through palomar mtn. road down here in SoCal driving at what i thought was fast (i was 16 at the time). got to the peak and everyone said i had to go with Dai...for an experience. i was like Itsuki from initial d, yellin like a little girl. from then on, its been my passion. been followin option one and video for a while, back when koguchi and nomura were piloting the 180, kumakubo's 180 truck conversion was blue, orido won the carboy drift contest...etc. i USE the hand brake to get just a little more angle without upsetting my balance if i use the front brakes (its NOT cheating, just another tool). too bad there aren't any drift day sessions...

There's a bunch of European Rally racers that don't feel like the hand brake is cheating.

I got started in Solo II and that's where I've stayed for the most part. There aren't any Solo I or lapping venues anywhere near here, or I'd probably take in some track days as well.
