actually, i'm able to avoid hwy 17 to the coast completely. to get to laguna seca, i take the inland route, which is about the same amount of total time. sears point has no significant climbs, and thunderhill is also a pretty flat shot. so i'm pretty lucky for the local tracks. short grades (10 minutes) have not been a problem.

Does or has anyone used a "Tow Dolly" for a 1st gen? Pro's and Con's? Average towing distance is 250 miles (one way).

Best things about tow dollys are they are cheap and light. Worst is two wheels of the towed vehicle are on the ground so at a minimum it's putting wear on bearings, bushings, and expensive race shocks. And they don't have brakes if I remember right.

With a dolly, the drive wheels always go up on the dolly.

Steering wheel should be tied to roll cage so front wheels don't move whilst being towed. At worst the steering wheel comes un-secured and the front wheels turn and race car swings around. Or someone rear ends your race car. Or a cop decides he needs you to make his quota that month and busts you for towing a racecar that's listed Planned Non Operation with two wheels on the ground (rare).

Thanks.
My sister tows a loaded horse trailer with her Ford F-150 with the 4.6L. It's a twenty foot gooseneck. Total weight of truck and trailer is about 16,000 lbs every weekend last summer, plus lighter load the year before. Truck seems to handle it OK up and down fairly steep grades, though they weren't that long. Her truck is some sport package with wide tires, regular cab & long box.

I wouldn't recommend this heavy of loading. It is way over the reccomended 13,000 lbs from Ford. They are looking to get a much heavier truck to do this in the future. The gooseneck trailer helps a lot, plus a good part of the weight is a big water tank behind the cab in the box.
If you tried this with a bumper hitch you'd be screwed.

i like the Kwikload. I'll be looking for an aluminum one with the fairing for myself one day. I'll just have to make sure the next company vehicle can do some towing
