They JUST changed the rule for the '06 GCR... for the worse if you ask me. Only the required bars have to meet the minimum now. At least before, people were cheating with 1.?? x.065. Now they're legal running 1.00x.02 or whatever they want to.
Of course, it makes it a little easier on us builders eh??
There may be something in the GCR that gives a minimum tube size overall. Never really had to look for it before. Just got my '06 GCR so I guess I'll be reading up tonight.

I haven't seen it in the GCR for sometime now. Not in the 05 and I believe the 04 also. I saw it some year, just can't remember. Got in trouble a few years ago because I installed a "X" in the rear supports that were smaller and the tech mentioned it. He showed me the rule somewhere in the GCR and passed it anyway. Oh well!

Thoughts on this cage? Would be going into a 1st Gen RX-7. I like the overall look of it. The same cage is used in GT3 Cup cars, GT3R's, RS's and RSR's i believe. Should there be any additions to the cage? Or changes to be more advantageous to the RX-7 chassis? I like how close everything is to the pillars. I've seen too many that are an inch or 2 away from the pillars. In my mind, they should attach as this has done to the A-pillars and B-pillars, as well as across the top of the windscreen.

Rexset,
If it is more for looks than functionality it would be ok. The rear downbars with bends would not be road race legal to my knowledge.
Lukus,
Great cage. Thanks for the pics. What class would you be running your car in?

Because my car is a 1st Gen RX-7 and i have a 13BT fitted, i'm really only able to run it in club track days, or possibly sports sedans (almost unlimited mods). It wouldn't be at the back of the sports sedans, but definitely not at the front!
Would the above cage benefit from having a more symmetrical design? Another diagonal in the main hoop so that they cross in an X? Another diagonal in the rear bracing? I'm thinking of adding those too bars so that everything is even, and also adding a bar between the rear towers. There'll be a bar, or bars running under the dash. Not sure if i should run from the front legs up to a point in the middle of the dash, so it is a V shape, or just a bar running across from one leg to the other? Probably good to run in a V shape to strengthen the firewall. Could possibly run the horizntal bar to make a triangle shape. Would be stronger, but all this makes the cage heavier.
The cage will also run to the front struts. I can't remember seeing any cages going tot he front struts on a 1st Gen in this thread. Is there anything i should do in particular in the front strut area? I have a large strut brace that goes back to the firewall, which has been re-inforced with a piece of square section tube. I'd like to weld in a bar inside where the wiper motor and mechanism is, but i don't know if that's possible?

does repalcing the driver's side door bars require a new log book?
Seems my cagebuilder (and the guys who did tech on my car last year- 4 people by 2 separate sanctioing bodies) over looked the rule disallowing the cutting of the stock impact beam....
Marcus, who believes the cage it safe, and really would enjoy not replacing them, but will by the rules.

Lukus,
If you goto the previous page and look at the last pic in my post. There is a bar from the firewall to the strut top and it looks like from the strut top forward to the frame

Uggh.

I have received emails from both NASA and SCCA National offices. Only required bars need to meet minimum requirements. Any additional bars are open, provided there are steel (no carbon fiber). Hope this helps with everybodies future cages

Im gonna need my fellow members help
Im going to be putting a roll cage in my car and in florida its hard to come by an engineer that is depandable for time and that can get work done when he says. I did however find this guy today that is ready for the car on tuesday and says he will have the car finished in 7 days.
here is what he is doing.
Basic 6pt roll cage
thru firewall to front struts then from front struts to chassis
Nascar style side protection with dual tubbing
Mount my Brake and clutch overhung assembly
Mount my sterring column
Mount my Race seat with brackets
Mount my Saefty Harness Tabs
Mount 4 gallon Dry sump Tank
Cut out and mount 22 gallon fuel cell.
all this for 3500.00 and guaranteed done in 7 days.
Please tell me what you guys think.
as for work, the man has an awsome eye for welding. very consistant and very artistic welds..
