Seat recommendations for an FC IT (road race) car.
Side mount preferred but can one make do with bottom mount? Best way to fit/mount a seat?
So what are you guys who are actually racing using.

Kirkey Aluminum or Ultrashield aluminum seat. Made my own seat rails using 2 foot flat bar of steel. Run bolts thru bottom of seat, thru flat bar and just bolt it to the floor with nylox nuts and big fat fender washers.

Be prepared, it took 5 hours to mount that seat including cutting the stock seat brackets out of the 1st gen (in the way).

 

Guy down here in NC is using a Butler in his ITS car.

Didn't really pay attention if it was side or bottom mount.

He works for CV Products (www.cvproducts.com). It was probably something he pulled out of the warehouse...

I like the Kirkey seats. i am using the Sparco FIA sliders in my car, as my co-driver is 4" taller than me. 40.00 for the sliders, 200-400 for the seats. Carl

 

I use a Kirkey Intermediate 20 degree layback in mine.

I'm about to buy a Kirkey Intermediate road racing seat, much more comfy, and I've lost enough weight to fit into the regular sizes now.

In either case, you're going to be mounting the seat to brackets on the sides, and the brackets to the floor pan. If you're exceptionally tall, you can cut out the rear seat mounts for more room.

And no one mentioned Sparco seats? I'll look into the Kirkeys a bit more though

Go with a Kirkey Economy, $75 or $70 with no cover. Buy some $30 seat making foam, and go to Wal-Mart and pick up some sturdy/tough fabric. Put trashbag in seat, and position yourself above trash bag. Have friend slowly pour mixed foam into bag. Remember it expands. When you've put enough in the bag to fit under your ***, sit down. Once seated, have friend finish filling bag. Once you get it up to your shoulders, have friend stop pouring in foam. Sit for a second in your racing position. Once the foam is somewhat cured, where you can get out of the car without it slopping down and losing shape, get out of car. Now, you've got a seat with a custom insert for the same price as the seat plus their regular insert.

Make sure to wear garage/grubby/whatever clothes so you don't ruin any good clothes in case the foam gets out of the bag.

I've got two Kirkey Economy's, one with the custom seat and one without. My background was in formula-style cars, so I got the 20 degree layback. If you're used to a more upright position, go with the 10. And if you're not anorexic, or a major fatass, it might take a while to get a seat. I just got my mid-size seat after like a month of backorder. I couldn't find one anywhere, everyone was backordered. I finally just gave up and waited.

Thanks for the info. It would be VERY cool to have a custom fitted seat. You make the cover yourself out of the sturdy fabric or am I missing a crucial step. I presume the insert goes under the cover, between the seat metal and the cover? And err yeah not a major fatass but definitely not anorexic either How long does the foam take to setup? And a good source for the seat foam?

I just got some thick fabric, cut it to fit around the foam and used a spray adhesive to stick it to it. The foam fits tight in the seat, and I just slide it in there. The fabric is to keep from tearing up the foam as I get in and out. It isn't perfect, there are some spots that bubble out, but it looks better than just the straight foam and has stood up to a lot of getting in and out of the car. I used a felt-like fabric, it looks almost like those really expensive F-1 seats from a distance If you've got a handy SO I bet she could fix you up with a cover that slips over the insert and seat.

I bought the seat and foam from Racer Wholesale. The seat width I got was the 15.5", which is the middle one. I bought it here.

The foam is here. I can't remember how long it took to setup, and I threw my container away. It wasn't long, I just got the window net hardware within an arms reach and set that up while I was waiting for it to cure. I don't think it was more than 15-30 minutes before I got out of the car. It doesn't fit as well as I thought it would, and I don't know if thats from my moving around or getting out too soon, or if I've lost some weight since then. Don't get me wrong, it fits much nicer than the standard cover, and looks a lot cooler, too!

 

I run a Sparco Ultra, it weighs 12.7 pounds and runs around $280-300. Pretty light non alum. seat you can buy for the money. Usually a seat with that weight will run over $700.
It has either side or bottom mounting holes.
