Question HELP! Road race in february! What should be my next modification.

I have a road race february 9th and me and this other RX-7 were having a serious battle for 1st place in my bracket. I can pull him on the straight aways but he can catch me in the turns. I have a 1987 n/a GTU with stock suspension with 160,000 miles on it. I also have open headers, roll cage,k/n air filter,15x6 stock rims with nangkang worn out tires, engine has 60,000 miles and the car is completely gutted. He has aftermarket springs and shocks that are lowered by 1",kumho racing tires, rollcage, and his car is completely gutted also.
I need a better set up but I don't have alot of money right now (Buying gifts for christmas), but I think he is going to get some headers before the next race and I won't be able pass him on the straight aways if he does. By the way, this was my first race and he has raced a few times already and also has been through a performance driving school.
Well let me know what you think.

P.S. If the guy that I raced in december is reading this ,I guess this is a challenge. Hope you show up for the next race.

well duh!! change those damn tires. either also get kumho's or maybe toyo's. next would have to be springs then shocks. are you racing the 87 N/A? you ever been to Roebling Road in Savannah GA??

I do plan on changing the tires but I was wondering if I would be faster on 15x7.5 or 16x 7 wheels with kumho tires?

You're on the origional OEM shocks? Rubber, then shocks man...My 86 has the same milage and I NEVER would have gone on a racetrack with other cars with those shocks. I's not sane let alone safe...

Do like I did. Find someone to give (or virtually give) you his used shocks. I got some used Konis for my FC and they're 100% better then the OEM units were. And get some used tires. Lots of road race guys get rid of perfectly good tires....they have a budget...

I just bought the car in november and I bought it just to race. I was dying to get it on the track and get some experience. I was able to hold my line and actually passed quite a few people including Porsche's ,BMW's and tricked out CRX's. I did have to take some performance driving lessons and had one lapping day before they would let me one the track. Road racing is new to our area and we're trying to get more people involved. That's why they let rookies on the so soon. you have to get experience some kind of way.The track is 1.8 miles long and not a very fast track,I get up to about 105 mph. The track has only been open for 1 year so far.

where is this again?

I'm not trying to be harsh. Believe me, I understand where you're coming from. I autocrossed my FC in a divisional the day after I got it (I sucked *** that day too).

I just think you'd be much better off racing with better equipment. No sense taking unneceassary risks. It's better to live to race another day, and all.

Try looking for slightly used suspension parts on thepartstrader.com.

Happy lapping!

How much $ for new racing tires for factory rims and new performance shocks and springs. I'm currently running 1:35 laps with my current setup. How much time do you think the tires and springs take off of my lap time?

These are the two web sites for the race track they are not up to date because they are having problems with hackers messing with there web site.
It is located in Belle Rose, Louisiana ( between New Orleans and Baton Rouge)

noproblemraceway.com

nordalist.tripod.com

Bruhman,

wheel/tire choice ALL depends on the class rules

If you run ITS spec, you're stuck with a 15x7 wheel.

What kind of racing is this? NASA, SCCA IT? Drivers education (not really road racing). If it's an SCCA IT, the tires are spec tires, so everyone runs the same tires? Dunno...confused from the initial post...

The track is trying to get sanctioned by the SCCA as soon as possible but they still have some work to do. We just following track rules for now. We run 8 classes right now. Super Production, Vintage V8, Formula, 4 bracket classes and carts.
I guess I better keep SCCA rules in mind so that I can still race when the track does get sanctioned by the SCCA.
Where can I find info on IT racing? I'm familiar with SCCA and NASA.

WHATS UP?
how does the video look from the race?
wish my video cam wouldn't have died.
great race............
just get some kumhos cheap and last awhile, i got 6 track days out of mine, should get more but need to re- do the alignment.
most guys running bracket run what they want it goes by lap times not by car class. no need to spend money on shocks or whatever just learn to drive you can knock off at least 3 secs a lap just from learning, look at the faster guys they have the same setup (only tires different) that you do. so be paitent and learn the track.
also i will be faster on the front straight next year.
header coming....lololol
goto improvedtouring.com
it will cost way more to run scca than the no problem stuff, our cars need way more work and money dropped into them. just ask silkworm...... the crx's are just to fast, they run 1:26:xxx compared to our 1:34:xxx
also give me a call i'm up till 11 pm all the time.
oh i have stock napa shocks that i cut the springs, from what i remeber winston had yours cut to so start with tires and the look for maybe a beefier front swaybar, maybe unhook the rear sway bar and see if that gets rid of the front end push.
later

Hey RPV.
I lost your card, but I figured that you would look at this site. The video looks good until the last lap. "lololol". You know we both ran out of our bracket and that the last lap was under caution (yellow flag, if you forgot) when you passed me. It sucks that they put up the checkered flag under caution and that they didn't see you pass under caution. But some of the flag people are volunteers and the other ones that do know the rules are to busy with other stuff.
I'm not sure if they will let us run with the ferrari's because they are renting the track as a private club, so that somebody like us with a cheap RX-7 doesn't crash into their expensive ferrari's. But they might let us catch a few laps, never know.
