I think it's...

Should he buy a 2nd gen exhaust... or a first gen...

...I could be wrong.

Actually he was trying to figure out should he buy new exhaust for his 2nd gen and autox that.

Or should he spend the money instead and buy a 1st gen and a autox that?

Personally, if you want to be competitive in the CSP class go buy a miata....

Althought the 2 time National Champion in the CSP class drives a Rx-3.

If you have the opportunity to autocross a car other than your daily driver, do that. Remember, your car is 14 years old. The possibility of tearing it up is higher (assuming that it's been maintained to the average level or less).
If you can't afford to have your daily driver down for repairs for a couple weeks, don't race it.

That being said, in ES, it probably won't make much difference which car you run. Especially if there's a fast driver in a Miata or MR2 in your area.

In theory, theory & practice are the same.
In practice, they are not.. (Yogi Berra)

eh,

I really think you should make the FC run right before heading out to buy another car that you are not for sure if it is in its best condition.

Just buy stuff and fix that FC up and make it run right before you get yourself into more trouble.

Smoke on startup is fairly regular. A little anyways.

But make sure your daily driver runs before you compete!

Just start with getting the car running well and also some autoX tires and go at it in stock class .. then modify your car from there, if you so choose to, as you develop your driving skills.

How about just get out there and do it!
Have a novice instructor ride along with you.. you will be surprised with your learning curve and find out ALOT more on your very first day driving on a course than you will driving for months on the street, its a different world... then youll be able to take what you learned by autocrossing and become a better driver on the street... its not the other way around.
Modding... start with tires.. without them, all other suspension mods wont work as they ought to, then shocks/struts, a good set of brake pads.. bring on the power stuff later on once youre in tune with your car and your skill.
