E-Production

is it possible to make an e-prod rx-7 for $10k?

It depends on how much of the work you can do. I would look for an IT car as a starter and go from there. To be competitive you'll need to spend a lot more. I would guess $30k+ for a reasonable National level car. I just spent $6k on a dog box trans ( and that was a bargain ) for my 2nd gen EP. There are some 1st gen cars thaat are a little cheaper, but the bottom line is: it's always cheaper to buy one already built than to go from scratch.

You could probably get a car to meet the safety regs assuming that you shop around and buy used stuff wherever possible and have a free donor car that needs no extra work, but you won't be able to afford any of the go-fast bits and you'll be way off pace.

It all adds up pretty quick: cage, fire system, fuel cell, seat, harnesses, driver suit, gloves, shoes, helmet, head sock, tow hooks, master shut-off switch, etc, etc, etc.

what about the e-prod cars on racecar200.com? they seem to be anywhere from 8-18k? How can i tell which one's would be competitive?

Possible? Yes. Competitive? Well, a lot of it is the nut behind the wheel. However, to compete with the drivers in the runoffs, you'll most likely need a lot more car. Have you thought about running in a IT class? It would be cheaper than e-prod for a competitive car.

The FC is competitive in ITS. Decent (but not great) cars can be had for under 10k. Here is an example:

As was pointed out, being at the pointy end of the pack is more the driver than the car (after a certain point). And the cost of getting the sort of seat time to develop the skills needed will be far greater than the initial investment in the car, especially in E-prod.

as you can infer from the prev posts E Prod is mostly a national level competition class, you can run it regional but there is little competition so everyone gets a trophy (BFD!!!!)
if expense is an issue national level makes little sense, you travel far and spend like a drunken sailor (no offense to sailors)......test days alone can break the bank for tuning to national level....front running national cars drive train/suspension are rebuilt then retuned each year just for the runoffs, let alone for each different track, it is truly quite a undertaking......

If your interested I can hook you up with a friend of mine that is selling his pristine ITS second gen car for close to your budget. Its probably the best deal out there, as its actually a competetive pro built car, as opposed to the shady home builts you normally find in that price range.

If cost is a consideration I would totally reccomend IT over EP. IT is the best way to get your driving skills up to par with lots of track time and low costs while you save up for that eventual EP car.

Even with that said to answer your question directlly I think that it would be impossible to build a decent EP car for under $10k. I built my ITS car from scratch and have close to $20k invested in it. For that price I could have bought a competitive already built car, tons of spares, and still had some change in my pocket. Its worth it 100% for the experience, and for the fact that everything is as you want it from the beggining, but it doesnt pay off financially.

No, you could get on the track for that kind of cash but development costs will be much larger. just to give you an idea I started with one brand of shocks on my car then switched to a second that was supposed to be better, wrecked the car and two shocks so took it as an opp to upgrade (JRZ triples) then had them rebuilt 2x to get the valving just right. So add that up include a bunch of spring sets and I was over 10k on shocks alone. Drunken sailor territory!
