I have recently started enjoying autocross with my 1983 RX7. I have a 12a stripped rats nest stripped carb, no emissions, tubular header, electric fans. New stock suspension and I started using Toyo Proxes RA1 tires on the front. I am thinking that a small turbo might help in the lower gears for autocross. Would the FD3S turbo manifold fit with some slight modifications to the bolt holes to my 12a. I have been told that the manifolds will interchange with slight modification. But no one has stated what years will work and what ones won't.... Also I am thinking of buying the front camber plates off eBay. Anyone had good luck with those?

 

What class are you aiming for?

 

lets start with a NO the FD3s STOCK manifold will not work , You may be able to just go to a good exhaust shop and have them custom make a manifold for you , But I'm not to well versed in 12a But its not the easiest to boost a carbed motor.

if you have the means , and want more power , try looking into a TII swap



BUT honestly .. in autocross Power is not king , grip , and driver mod will trump power every time .

 

I'm going to repeat what has already been said: In Autocross, HP is not king. Handling and driver skill/experience is everything. Adding a turbo to your car will put you in a different class where it will be very difficult to be competitive. Its a big can of worms your opening here.

As for the swap, no an FD3S manifold will not fit a 12A. You'd be looking at switching the entire motor to a turbo motor and transmission. Plus ECU, intercooling, fuel upgrades, etc.

 

dont worry about the turbo...your money will be better spent on suspension etc. i race a 83 with the 12a motor in it with a holley kit, free flow exhaust, exedy race clutch, forza seats, ground control coilovers and camber plates, illumina shocks, runs on 15x7 wheels now going to make a move to a 8inch rim soon! 225/45/15 200 tread wear bf goodrich tires. our cars are to dang light to worry about 500 hp. i make maybe 110 at the rear wheels and i stomp on cars i shouldn't. its about handling in auto x no straight line. put the turbo money into some good traction upgrades and you will be happier.

 

Your using ground control suspension. Can I ask is it a home made system/ modified to fit or do they make ones to fit our cars. It's the biggest problem I've been having finding parts to fit upgraded.

its a made to fit, a little grinding required on the struts and being decent with a welder can help. but a great kit made a HUGE differance in my car and the 375 front springs and 200 rear are perfect for auto x. the guys at ground control are great to work with and the install onto the car is very straight forward and easy. link posted below

There are a few places that have suspension mods for the early 7s. 7's Only has a few things of interest. > Home
like Coil over stuff. rear links and wats link parts to fix the rear geometry. Brake kits. Not much in the way of parts on the website. They are old fashion. Call and talk to them.
But you got to figure out what class you want to run. Then you can figure out what you can do. Then figure out how much $$ you have to spend.

You also need to remember race parts are not really meant for the street. They are noisy and harsh on the ride.

Oh and do NOT put poly bushings in the rear. If your staying with the OME 4 link, get new uppers at the very lest if not all 4. You need the rubber to be soft and flexible.
