1st gen brake kits??
Anybody know of aftermarket brake kits for 1st gens? What are the road racing and autox cars using? Are they just using high performance pads with the stock calipers and rotors? I have an '82 GSL and would like to have more powerful and better looking brakes behind my wheels.

I emailed them before the weekend. They told me it was a bolt-in kit that can be used on a street car if desired and that to outfit all four corners would cost $1900.

to upgrade to there 11 3/4 (or something like that) inch rotors, you need to be running with 16in wheels...
but damn they are huge. i look at the kit every time i am out there.

Guys,
I can verify that the 11.75 rotors do not exactly fit inside a 15" wheel. I was there this last weekend and test fit my 15" HRE wheels on a SUPER-7 racecar. It rubbed the caliper, but only slightly. It does look like the caliper can be machined clearenced enough to make them fit though. I will be taking on this task in the near future.

I dunno, personally I have never been able to heat up my brakes enough to justufy a big brake kit....
I am running Blackhawk Hp+ all the way around, and after 6 15 min. sessions @ Portland International Raceway I wasent able to make them fade enough to worrie about at all...
I guess to each his own, but If your having a problem with your brakes heating up to much, There are very high quality cross drilled rotors out there that should help disipate any excess heat build up.

Berny's First gen has got a 13b turbo motor in it probably pushing over 250hp I got a ride in it once and it felt much quicker than my FD
That's the reason he needs as much brakes as he can get stuffed into his 15" rims.

OK I wasent aware of the power that you were putting down.....
I guess I will have to recant what I said earlier. I suppose once I switch to the new streetport in august I will probobly want some bigger brakes as well....

No problem Micah.. Even with your street-port, you should be ok. I really never had an issue with my last 7, that was a 13B street-port. The 12A brakes worked just fine on that car. If you really feel you need to improve the brakes, then just move up to the GSL-SE brakes.. Of course you'll need to change wheels.
BTW, what's the specs on those Kosei wheels you're running?

Ther Kosie K1's I am runngin are 15x7 with a 4x110 bolt pattern, they weigh in 11.5 lbs.
I actually got ahold of a full SE suspension for my car about a month after I bought the wheels......
I just couldent make myself buy new wheels, so I passed it up.

Its cool that you guys have found a big brake kit! I didnt know one existed. I would have gone that route if i saw it earlier. I have a GSL-SE brakes and suspension, I bought some cross-drilled rotors, and turbo II calipers. I havent yet had the brackets made, but I'm pretty sure the GSL-SE rotors with TII calipers will work after the machine work. I also have a set of project mu brake pads, and stainless steel lines waiting. I'm going to be fitting this system in about 3-4 weeks and let you guys know how the hybrid setup works. I know the SE rotors are about 1" shy of the TII, but I think if I trim the outer edges of the pads it will all line up. If it works, it may prove to be a "poor mans" performance brake system. I'm running 15x8 front wheels, and clearance has checked out. I also am about to be pushing 280+ HP, after the tII motor is in place, so as much braking I can get the better!!

I have an '84 with a streetported 13B and 'SE suspension. I use the car for club road racing events, and some of the sessions I've run in will last 30 minutes. I had serious brake fade problems with my all stock system (fluid boiling, even pad separation), so I threw the kitchen sink at my 'SE brake system: brake cooling hose from my Design Energy front air dam to my Mazda Performance brake ducts, Ford DOT3 brake fluid, new rotors, and Hawk pads -- blue in front and HP+ rear. My brakes now work like a dog hitting the end of its leash lap after lap.
Since I did all this stuff simultaneously, I can't tell which item helped the most, but I'm guessing that the cooling air was the biggest contributor -- something to consider for those that need more stopping power but don't have much spending power, like me.
Also, for the guy who was considering adding the TII brake calipers to the 'SE rotors: Consider taking the extra step and using 2nd gen 4-lug rotors, too. You'll have to adapt the 2nd gen hub to your spindle, but this will save you a lot of time and money in the long run, since rotor replacement will only involve the rotor, and not the integral rotor/hub unit like we have on the 1st gen.

Yeah , i am looking into trying to find the 4 lug hubs, but everyone is only selling the 5 lugs. I have to report that yesterday I trial fitted the TII calipers, they are almost the exact same bolt pattern of the stock GSL-SE, but there no way to attach to the front or back side of the spindel, because the caliper is either over to far one way and then over to far the other way. The only way I can make this work is to get a custom rotor made to be bigger, about 11.5 " and then a simple bracket will extend the brake caliper and it will all fit. I'm holding off on the custom rotors, since I already have cross-drilled stock sized ones. In the future it will be a interesting job.

I road race my Supercharged / NOS injected (75 SHOT) 13B (TII stock port) in my 85' GSL-SE wide/body on many tracks in California & Nevada I found that I needed to step up the breaking ability of my RX-7 one December at Laguna Seca. I made a small investment in sloted & cross drilled rotors in front, Porterfield racing pads, stainless steel Racing Beat lines at all 4 corners, some cool air ducting from the front air dam, and finaly MOTUL RBF (racing brake fluid) 600. I now have no complaints about my 7's stopping power.
However, after I install my newly built MAZDATRIX streetported 13B & take the Nos to 150HP I might be singing a different tune.
