Who Should Tune Your Car

If paying a tuner, get one with experience for the type of tune you need.

Recently I have studied two maps for street/road race type of cars. Both were single turbos; one stock port and the other large street port. Both engines had performance issues.

Both were tuned by the same tuner with mainly drag racing expertise.
He mainly tunes for full power. Timing was antiquated with no timing advance after peak torque, and the fuel was very roughly adjusted. Cruise, and cruise to boost transition timing and fuel were also poor.

If you have a street/track car that needs tuning, go to someone like Steve Kahn.

not to dig on steve either but he also rarely spends any time for regular driving map areas, had to clean up his work on more than a few occasions also.

you can be picky all you want but i don't know a tuner who can spend a full day tuning your car for a decent price unless it is your buddy.

True, only you can spend the time for non boost perfection tuning on your own car.
Even so, Steve's is better than most I have seen.

That is why it is imperative to get a DATALOGIC, WB, laptop and quit being a ***** and learn.

Just building on this point: from a business perspective, tuning is like most other professional service industries. The tuner prices the job based on the number of hours he expects to budget for the job. If he puts more time into it than he budgeted he is taking a financial hit. So he's got to do the best he can in the time allotted. A good experienced tuner may be able to get more done in a shorter period of time, or might have a large library of base maps that he has built. But there's only so much you can do in two or three hours, no matter how knowledgeable and experienced you are. The worst situation is when you pay for expensive "complete tuning packages" at shops where you end up just overpaying for a couple hours of dyno time.

All that being said, if you do want to take the plunge and tune your own engine you have to be fully committed.

This would be one of the reasons we never schedule more that one car for tuning on any given day. Being part of a dyno tuning group will never give you the best tune.
