so let me get this straight
I'm new to PowerFC's. I am very familiar with AEM and Megasquirt, my rx7 does not run because the GM 3-Bar map sensor is not calibrated correctly and reads -370mmhg. I have the commander but as far as I'm reading it's not possible to fix this problem unless I buy a data cable and Datalogit software for a ridiculous amount of money, or I have to send my ecu out to be programmed and not have it for a few weeks probably.
and then if I want the basemap with the correct settings that should be on the ecu, but got wiped when it was re-initialized (my fault on that. I was told it would remove edited map settings but keep the basemap) I have to pay even more because I don't have the file. (this was my friends car and he died, I don't know where he has the file).
am I correct? is it actually this crazy to own a powerfc and get a car running or am I just insane? so basically I cant even start the car without finding/buying a cable and software, and then paying for a map? or sending out my ecu? Am I crazy for thinking that for the price of this ecu, it should be easier to be able to change some important settings.. or upload a map to it at the very basic level?
now don't get me wrong, this ecu looks awesome and I'm told it can handle rotary's better than any other and I can't wait to use it.. but come on!

In the mid 1990s the ECU was conceived as a box you put in your car and for the most part trust to a tuner at a licensed shop in Japan. Japan is a small country with very few people who wrench on their own cars; there's no space to do it. There were also no internet forums in the sense we are used to now, so online collaboration wasn't possible. The Datalogit is a 3rd party hack, a workaround for this business model.
There are advantages and disadvantages to using the Power FC. You've identified one of the disadvantages. One of the biggest advantages is that, compared to other ECU's, you just plug it in and it works fine on a mildly modified car. It has the main outputs of the stock ECU set up and ready to go (turbo system, emissions, OMP), but you have limited adjustability compared to other systems.
As for the MAP sensor issue, the Apex'i sensor (just a rebadged Denso unit) plugs right in and can be configured without a Datalogit.

You change back to the stock FD sensor which would work with the basemap. Or you could mail it to me and ill change it to the 3 bar.
But it sounds like the ECU would need to be tuned if you reset it and the car is modified. The only way to properly tune the powerfc is with the datalogit. The commander is realistically only useful for to look at the monitor readings and the voltages.

I may have a lead on a cable so I can do this.. but if that falls through I wouldn't mind sending the ecu to someone fairly local to me.. I would even take a day trip and drop it off to you if I was bored enough
