Arrow Intake Temps

This is a simple one.

What is your typical intake temp under normal driving around conditions for a given outdoor temp and water temp.

For example, mine today were

Outside - 90 F
Air Temp - 55 C
Water Temp - 86 C

I'm trying to figure out if I'm getting reasonably cold air or not...

Anyone have any tips for cooling (I have a single turbo if it matters)? I already made a block off plate by the radiator and stuff...

That is the same as i get with stock twin and intercooler...just easy driving.

FMIC made a world of difference.

I havent seen > 40C intake temps with the Greddy 2 FMIC. I haven't had it out in > 80F weather yet, but on a cruise a few weeks ago, outside temp was about 75F, intake temps were 25 - 34C. (ie 25C at cruise, up to 34C after a few hard rolling runs)

oh, wait, I didn't have a front bumper on at all, so that might have made a cooling difference too...

I'll let you know next week some good figures when I get my car back with a bumper on it.

PS Have never seen water temps above 91C since I used my datalogit to fan mod down to 89, 90 & 91C. Used to commonly see 94C - 96C after running hard.

I did a series of tests before and after the FMIC on temperatures...I'll have to see if I can find any mentions of that from last year.

Yesterday:
Outside: 89+ F
Intake Air Temp: 55C (stop and go) downto 45C (first time I was able to getup to freeway speeds)
Water Temp: 89 C
(Note Kyle turned me onto the same lowering of the fan-turn-on threshold with the datalogit)

Any of you Columbus guys wanna bring your Datalogit down to Louisville?

I've been dealing with cooling issues lately. nocab72 is right, the FMIC certainly does well for the intake temps, but I'm wondering how much at the expense of water temps (blocking the rad). Over time, in mild stop-and-go traffic, or on particularly hot days, I'll see my water temps climb up to 100C. I've got a Koyo, Pettit AST, new hoses, water wetter, and I use the fan switch mod at about 90C and it'll still climb up there eventually. All that's left are better ducting, the water pump, and the thermostat. Grr.

Here's what I saw yesterday, ambient temps were about 82F @ 85% humidity.

Normal cruising:

Water - 87C
Air - 52C

During a hard run:

Water - 89C
Air - 57C

This is with stock twins running 11.5 psi on the stock IC. I'm installing my new RX-7 Fashion FMIC over the weekend so I'll post again after I get that in.

After warming up my intake during the Houston summer is usually around 45C, coolant temps in the high 80's or low 90'sC.

After shutting the car down or sitting at idle in 90+F ambient, the intake temps may get into the low 60's. They fall after a bit of highway cruising to high 40's low 50's and eventually settle around 44C. After a bit of highway cruise in 90+F ambient the coolant typically settles around 88/89C.

These air temp and water temps are exactly what I am getting. Only difference is it is 105 here instead of 72. Where is the air temp reading taken from? Is this an indication that I am sucking in hot air or is the sensor way up on the intake manifold so the air is just heated up by the time it gets there?

Hey guys, I have a 93 FD, fully ported, 3mm apexes, the works. Using single T-88. Power FC, getting the Datalogit and wide band lambda. 850 primaries, 1600 secondaries.

Created my own air/freon intercooler. At outlet, Autometer gauge pegs below 50 F.

Been running the car for two days-- GOT A HUGE FREAKIN PROBLEM---

My water temps are soaring between 103 and 109. Barely am touching the boost. Only driven the car three times, and now I'm scared to death that you guys are getting your temps around 90 or so.

Got a Mazda Comp radiator, so that's not it. Sealed off all the areas around the radiator. What gives?

CAN ANYBODY HELP ME WITH SOME IDEAS? I had Eric Hsu at XS retune the Power FC for a second time. The fans will NOT kick on after I cut off the car, AND the thing is running hot. somebody out there please, please throw me a freakin bone here!

Last night here in Atlanta, I drove the car around (trip#2), Water temps would hover at 99C when not on ANY boost AND not turning on the A/C compressor. of course, as soon as I hit the button, the water temp climbed to 103. Today, it hit 109 as I drove the car to get the ECTA stickers for the next meet.

anybody, please help!!

Dude...post some pics and info on the air/freon intercooler!

Your water temps are higher than others posted, but not yet "overheating" high. I don't really like to see anything over 100 C, so I have both of my fans coming on at 92 C (the first at 85 C). Even when it is hot outside (100 F), I never go above 95-97 C (usually run between 85 and 91 - when I am taking it easy).

Has yours always run at that temp?

When are your fans turning on?

Have you checked to make sure both are spinning? For a while one of my fan motors was not spinning. It would go up to the 105 to 110 C range on 90 F days (with one fan only).

Coolant level OK?

Depending on when your fans on coming on, you may want to check/replace the coolant (I am running 75 H2O / 25 coolant + water wetter) and the thermostat.

All temps in Celcius. Cruising on the highway my intake temp is usually 10 -12 degrees over ambient on a sunny day with relatively low humidity. Even when I floor it and take it to waaay over the speed limit, intake temp didn't change. My water temperature is usually at 94 degrees. The highest water temp I have ever seen is 100 degrees on a 25 degree sunny day. This was in stop and go traffic and quickly dropped to 94 once the fans kicked in. I had stock twins, M2 carbon intake, M2 medium intercooler and the stock rad, both cats and HKS cat back. Never got a chance to observe the effect of the downpipe I installed.

Is it even possible for the intake temp to get down to ambient? Never mind the effects of FMIC VS SMIC, the position of the temp sensor has got to be influenced by radiant heat from the engine. Maybe that air / freon intercooler is the way to go. I've debated the merits in the back of my head for a while. Especially when I had to keep shutting off the A/C on a 30 degree day

Forgot to mention that my temps were with Evans coolant running zero pressure, mazdacomp radiator, ASP race IC and hot air intake.

Stock IC and stock rad and cruising on the hwy mildly boosting and running aorund 85mph or so

Outside temp: about 90f
Air temp: between 40-45c
Water temp: between 90-95c

Intake 25C (@ 60MPH or 100KPH)
Intake 30C (@ 50MPH or 80KPH)
Water Temp 90C

MazdaSpeed GTC front
MazdaSpeed vented hood

damn ur guys intake temps are low.

my intake temps are like 60-70 when the temp is 86 outside.
my water temp for normal driving was 91-96. ne ways how does the ecu calculate these temps? i just got my PFC yesterday so im a newbie. also how do i use the fan mod with the PFC?

The PFC just uses the stock temperature sensors to give you the values. If you get a Datalogit, you can reprogram your PFC to turn the fans on at any temperature.

I don't have a datalogit, but many forum members do. It is software and hardware that allow you to program the PFC from a laptop. Do a search for where to get one.
