How rich = carbon buildup?

Was wondering at what AFR that you start seeing significant carbon buildup problems. My last engine suffered from sticking seals do to excessive carbon, and obviously I don't want that to happen again. I thought I had leaned things out quite a bit since then...cruise is roughly 13's and 14's, WOT is 11.5, but my tailpipe is so black it won't even come off anymore and my wideband that I just replaced was equally as black.

Was curious just how well you have to be tuned to prevent damage.

Yeah, I've done the water cleaning, as well as Amsoil PI, and I'll soon be installing WI, but still, in my opinion those are band-aids to the real problem which is that I'm too rich. Just curious at what AFR carbon build-up begins being a problem...

No problem. I really couldn't tell much difference from the water cleaning. It was fun turning the rotary into a steam engine, but the results for me were minimal enough that I wasn't sure if I was just imagining them. I ran about 4, 2-liter bottles through it.

I DID notice an improvement from the Amsoil PI, though. I was starting to have idle problems, and it cleared that up. But I had to run two bottles through it, adding about 2 oz per tank. You can't just pour a whole bottle through at once like you do the other fuel additives.

Interesting
Maybe you need to do it more than once
PS I am afraid of salt residue coming from the water, aren't you ?

I'm sorry for how dumb this question may sound but how does the water cleaning procedure go?

I take it you must run bottles of water into the motor? while it's running? & if so how do you get them in there through the turbo intake?

It's a very simple process. Just get a 2 or 3 liter bottle, and run a vacuum line from one of the intake nipples into the bottle of water. It'll suck it in at the right rate. You'll just have to put your foot on the gas to keep it from stalling, though. That's about it, but you can find more detail on the forum if you search.
