Got tuned...

Ok so I got my pfc tuned on the dyno/wb last week and I have a few questions about the power I put out, heres my mod list:
new Pettit large sp
DP, MP, CB
K&N intake
FMIC
PowerFC
Supra fuel pump
1300cc sec. inj.
pulley kit
koyo rad.
Hyperground kit
My numbers were: 341hp with an A/F of 11-11.1
My pettit engine only has about 3k miles and those numbers were at 14psi, We used pretty much the base Ign. maps only advancing a dgree or two here and there.
I dont have datalogit so we used my commander, I dont think the guy who did the tuning was real comfortable playing with the timing maps. But he seemed real familiar with the fuel maps...
For my mods do these numbers seem reasonable?
I can post the maps Im using but it will take a while...

Fair power values. My stock intake port, small ported exhaust engine with many similar mods puts out 312RWHP at 12psi. I run 11.8 AFRs at 12PSI and 11.5s at 14PSI.

I would lean it out to 11.5 at 14psi. That would help.
With a FMIC, 1300secs, and upgraded fuel system, you do not need to run those overrich Mazda levels. Remember Mazda's programming was for an inadequate
cooling system and way too samll IC. They used all that fuel for cooling.

Tune for 11.5 on the road with a wideband in 4th gear from 3500-7000rpm.

Yea those are the pulls we did, actually I was using The "suganuma" fuel maps to get to the dyno, Damn those are some stinky rich maps! I had like some really subtle violent stumble at like 5k rpm that I could not get past, on the dyno, it was almost like a fuel cut feeling.

Well we tuned that stumble out in 1 or 2 pulls but it was probably like 70-75 degrees out that day, now today it got to almost 85 outside and that stumble came back, but this time only in 3rd & 4th gear...

And doesnt it seem odd that we stuck with basically the base PFC maps? I think Im gonna try using the suganuma ign. maps for a run on the dyno and see if it makes any difference, also now I gotta go back and get it leaned out for the hotter weather were having...

Anyone had that problem where the weather actually changes your AFRs that much?

Also when he was tuning and kinda playing with the timing maps a little he didnt want to go any farther cuz my stock knock sensor was reading at like 30-35... Ive read those are bogus and also people running a knock of like 150 all day...!?

I dunno Im just gonna have to go back there and get it tuned out better when its hotter out & do more research on timing with a street port.

thanks for the input Chuck

Do yourself a favor and have someone tune it with a Datalogit. Tuning with the Comander is not the way to do it. You need someone who can put in good tempeture correction factors, or you tune will change with the weather.

There is nobody in Minnesota who is familiar using the Datalogit or the PFC for that matter that I can find... This guy is the best Ive seen and hes one of 2-dynos in this state that goes above 200hp...!

Ive seen temp correction in the commander what would be the diff. with the logit anyway ?

I wouldn't play with the timing much if you car is normally around 30 to 35, that's great. If the PFC manual think below 60 in engine noise your safe and could add a degree at the top end and see what happens the to the knock reading. Granted the datalogit helps since you can log the run and see where the knock happens at...ie at throttle lift, under WOT at 6500 roms, etc. You dont' want to add timing at your peak torque area since that is when the engine is under the most stress. Work it in after peak torque and maybe around 3000. But not around 4500 to 5200 rpms....leave that alone for now. As always, becareful and make small changes for fuel and timing and watch for the changes they make.

I was just catching up on a few threads as it appears that some people are using a PFC map i used to run and posted a few years ago. this map was pre-programmed by SR motorsports for my mods at the time. I don't run that map or EMS anymore so i can't critique it very well. I just wanted to come back and make sure it was known where the maps originated from. Looking back, I would check over the map before really getting on it. IIRC, it was pretty rich and somewhat conservative in the ignition, but i don't want to put my name behind it whether the results are good or bad since i did not create the map in the first place and honestly dont remember how good or bad it ran.

Temperature correction factors needs your attention. It's the only way to tune a car at one temperature and have it still be close when the temperature changes. Too bad our cars don't do air density!
