fwd: Can I get away with Any '16bit' apexi FC?

Hi all,

I have a mid 1998 Rx-7 FD, I want to know if I can use a 99+ Spec Apexi Power FC.

OFc I understand that CPU would not have an ideal stock map but I suspect the connector would be the same as my 98 car is a 16bit one.

Anyone have any Ideas?* **

I have been told by several of our Australian customers that the 99 PFC plugs in and runs the 96-98 RX7 just fine. If I recall correctly there is one issue with the cooling fan control, but I might be wrong about that.

I suspect that all the Rx-7 PFC's are basically the same hardware & firmware (calculations & logic), with just different electrical connectors. Basically, just because the FD came with a 16 bit ECU on series 8 & 9 doesn't mean the associated PFC is any different or better. Again this is a suspicion of mine, that's all.

I'm pretty sure that's the case too. That's why I ' ' marked the 16bit. I assume the connectors follow the ECU bits.

96-1998 and 99+ '16bit era ECU's are the same except the base map on the 99+ will tune for the revised Airbox and 99+ turbos and the base map on the 1996-1998 will tune for the older turbos and older airbox.

I'm looking to use a rev2 99+ Apexi PFC on a 1998 car, I have twin oil coolers so I can take a bit more heat but I don't 99 turbos or air box. Does anyone know what traps or dangers I might face (assuming they are indeed electrically compatible.)

Also I have never used an Apexi, surely I could just adjust the base map to be 1998 car safe before I even crank the car?

I'm sure someone has done this before.

Unhappy Following on

Following on from the OP I bought a 99+ PFC and installed it on my 98 car. It plugs right in as expected however when the key is turned I get a clicking from the hood.

It sounds like a relay/solinoid actuator is going on and off like a bell.

see video http://s000.tinyupload.com/?file_id=...45621591879906

Also the car won't start, it behaves as if its badly flooded.

Anyone have advice on this? If you need further info I would be happy to provide pictures etc...

sounds like a bad power fc...

i m using a fd3s5 on my 2001 and it runs fine and i tried it several times with other cars...

And Banzai is correct, theres an additional fan controller switch on the 96-98. It is only a wire. While i havent removed it from mine (yes fans run all the time) it should be an easy fix

Really hope it's ok, it was bought used. Interestingly that solenoid/relay problem does not happen after trying to crank once. This points strongly to the ecu.

Does anyone know what the pfc would do differently after 1 unsuccessful cranking?

I fiddled around with connectors pressing them in and found that fixed the bell like clicking from the rats nest.

I still can't start the motor though, it seems to splutter every few seconds and it appears it may start but then it doesn't. Car has no trouble starting with own ecu. I have reset the apexi a few times to be sure it's default.

My mods are catback ,fan mod on jspec 98/6 car.
