Question FC-Edit for mac os x

Using wine to port FC-Edit to mac os x. I am working with the FC-Edit demo as I have yet to receive my datalogit from my purchase last week (it is in the mail hopefully, no tracking number provided yet).

App seems to generally work with some minor window resizing bugs. I can open and edit files, change tabs, etc. I don't have anything to test with yet.

No promises, but this may be an option to all those who does not want to run m$oft windoze, and have an intel mac. I don't even know if it will recognize the datalogit.

I should try this too, my laptop is running on Ubuntu.
Right now I'm doing a cleaner wire loom so I can't test, I'll try as soon as possible to let you know

My datalogit left NZ two days ago. When it arrives, my builder said I can test it on one of his cars.

My datalogit arrived. Tested with FC-Edit v2.130 and all seems well so far. Still have to sort out the window resizing issues. My mac automatically recognizes the usb to serial adaptor. I'll get an "in field" test soon.

Why not partition your HD to run windows for your running software? All you'll have to do is reboot your computer to switch between the two.

Because if I have to run windoze on my computer... I'll end up smashing it.

Why wouldn't you want a mac os version of an app?!
  • No need to reboot.
  • No need to waste disk space (my version of FC-Edit for mac is 136.6mb vs windows xp spa alone weighing in at 1.5gb?).
  • You don't actually have to spend $100-250 on a copy of Windoze, unless you pirate it.
  • You don't have to waste a ton of system resources if your running a virtual windows install.
  • You just hate windoze with a passion but need to use FC-Edit, and have a mac.

I know it's not a native app, but it's the next best thing.

Fo me, I hate Windoze and Apple! You need to spend 200$ for a copy of windows, or you need to spend 300$ more on hardware for Apple.
So I use Linux with wine, and FC-Edith is not an issue, works superb!

This could prove very useful... As I run the worst Mac for hardware (first Gen Air) it's kinda slow... But for all I do do far it's perfect, and extremely light/small

Thanks for posting this up...

Thumbs down

Went to my tuners shop and tried to hook up my datalogit to a powerfc. That's when I realized that I spent 3 bills on an archaic piece of hardware that I have to modify. The center alignment pin on the datalogit is not shaped the same as the powerfc. Did they not test these things? I know I could snap off the pin, but what the hell.!

In short, I didn't get to test my app today like expected.

I'm working on it man. It's not native... but it would work with mac os x. Its the windows FC-Edit software with a "wrapper" so it can work on mac os x.

Going to grab a mouse extension cable today and modify it to fit the powerFC so that I am not modifying the datalogit.

email from datalogit
"there is no way we can tell customers in advance if they have this type of connector – it’s very rare."
"we did look at making our cables to suit but the 5pin Mini Din is an industry standard size."
Basically, datalogit is saying that they knew this was an issue and they don't want to bother modifying their current unit, or even telling customers that it may require modifying with certain powerFC units.

Hopefully I'll get this tested next week and if it works, find a way to release it so datalogit not unhappy with me. Datalogit has a weird policy about their software. Their is no registering of the software, but you have to register your datalogit to download the software online.

Off topic... but just thinking... if anyone has iOS programming experience- it would be sick to write an iOS app to communicate to the powerFC. There is 30pin to serial adaptors out there. An iPad could be your music (iPod and pandora), navigation, tuner all in one unit.

I tested it last night... failed to connect to the datalogit.

Running wineskin-2.5.3 and WS8Wine1.4-rc1 with wineskin. Wine-tricked the missing MFC42.dll for anyone one in the future.

It would probably work if I configured the serial port. I guess wine does not do it automatically. This would mean that the datalogit would probably have to be plugged into a specific usb port on your computer to work.

It's getting tough to do this without a car to test on. My car won't be ready until summer. Engine is out for rebuild. I have to meet up with my builder each time, 45 minutes away. I'll post back when I can.

Nah. Spent a ton of money on girlfriends car and it still isn't running. Buying her another car. My keg is finally done, but I still have to port the wastegate, get heat protective materials, fuel and oil lines, and get gaskets.

If someone with a PowerFC locally would be willing to let me test the app, I could possibly have a result much sooner. Otherwise, we must wait until I finish my car hopefully by this fall.
