new to the forums - '84 12A FB
Hi, I'm Matthew Hopkins and I've been reading the forums for a couple of weeks and thought I'd post.
I have a 1984 12A FB, it was given to me by a friend who I helped out a lot who in turn got it from a friend who owed him a big favor. When we got it it was a lot of work to get it to turn over but we managed and were able to get it to a shop to have the engine pulled and then took the engine to a guy who is sponsored by Mazda Racing I hear up here in Northern California. He basically built a new engine, the only part that was used from the old one was a front casing. I know it was ported but I don't know if it was Street or Bridge, I imagine it was one of the cheaper two as I didn't have much scratch at the moment and was just trying to get mobile.
There was a fat exhaust leak, like I'd show the car to my friends and we'd be standing in front of it and we were getting high off of the fumes heh. Anycase we got new exhaust on it, magnaflow muffler. When we took it to be pre-tested for smog it was grossly polluting, like 3500 HCppm and idling at 2300. We took it to get a new cat (a larger size up from what it initially had, what I imagine was stock) and the old one was gutted, nothing in there. When we took it back to be pre-tested with the new cat it was all 0s on all tests.
We tried to put an after-market air filter on it we got from Pep Boys but it wouldn't fit so we're planning on making a frankenstein from another stock air filter case(?), cut out the sides of it all nice to open it up and we also have a nice big piece of pipe to put in there to pull air to it from under the car.
The sound system was all torn out before we got the car so we're putting in 2 4" and 2 6.5" Pioneer speakers, also got a 300W 4-channel Pioneer amp at a good deal open-box from Circuit City we're going to put in. Right now I have an older Rockford Fosgate deck I'm putting in, it's pretty good though and has mp3 support.
Anycase, sorry I carried on so long and look forward to being a part of this online community.
