1. Make certain that your usb-serial converter is being recognized by Windows. Right-click My Computer | Properties | Hardware | Device Manager. Check to see that your usb-serial converter is showing under Ports (COM & LPT) and that there isn't a yellow question mark but an icon that looks like a plug.
If you don't see it, then you'll need to re-install the drivers for your usb-serial converter.
2. You'll need to know which COM port your usb-serial converter is on. Just check the Device Manager and expand Ports. You should see your usb-serial converter somewhere in there (assuming you took care of No. 1).
Once you know which COM port your usb-serial converter is on, you can point it on the application.

I am using the black datalogit box connected to my laptop with a serial to usb converter. After installing driver for the converter (was on the install CD I got from Datalogit) it connects, but only for a very short time.
It stays connected only about 10 sec before I have restart program and connect again.
Yesterday I repeted this about 30 times before I got all the changes done in my PFC.
Slightly different than the original topic, but anyone else have the same problem?

I recently switched to a newer laptop and I am using the IoGear USB converter that Chuck recommends. I have never had a problem. http://www.iogear.com/product/GUC232A/

Which driver do you need? I have all for the black box, and can email it to your one net account.
PM me as I don't watch this area very often.

Well, I found a serial to USB converter driver...Im finding it hooking up to COM port 5. Now when I try to "read all" or auto-detect, Im getting a "Run-time error '8020': Error Reading comm Device"

New drivers didn't help
I was also getting the "cannot initialize" or whatever when trying to "Read All"
I changed the USB cable to a different USB port on the laptop, which changed it to Com 5 from Com 4. I changed the setting in FC Edit from 5 to 4 and now it works great.
Go figure
