Cutting wires/removeing pins....really necessary??

Hi all....
I installed my PFC about a month ago. I purchased it from SR Motorsports, who "tuned" it for my mods. They told me to simply plug it in and go. However, I've read numerous posts on this forum about cutting wires/removing pins in the ecu harness for the PFC to work correctly.

Now I'm wondering if the cutting of wires is necessary, and why. Does anyone really know what this does. I'm gonna spend some "quality time" with the wiring diagram tonight to find out where these wires go. My car seems to run very well. The only problem I have is that the idle "hunts" with the AC on....would wire cutting help this. SR doesn't seem interested in helping...or simply don't know. (Which is a good topic for another thread I might add.) Perhaps I'm not getting full "potential" from my setup without cutting the wires. Who knows. Does anyone really know anything about this unit that isn't speculation?

I will buy a datalogit for tuning purposes soon (MAC version I hope).....and it's fabulous having so much knowledge coming out of this forum. But I sure wish we had some APEXi support here, other than a couple dealers who appear to be unbelievably arrogant and secretive.

Thanks in advance.
Fabian

Oooh, oooh, I know the answer to this one! If you got your PFC from SR Motorsports then they already pulled the pins for you. That's how they achieve their "plug and play" install. No need to do anything further.

Well, if you want to be absolutely certain you could uninstall it and verify. I had to cut the wires, so I've got no first-hand experience, but I would imagine it would be pretty obvious if they were gone.

Who knows, you may have talked to some receptionist who didn't have a clue.

SR pulls the pins for yeah. I had to cut the pins off mine, but I did drive it for quit awhile with the pins and wires uncut, the only problem it causes, the car gets a fluxuating idle when it is hot on just starting the engine.

I cut the wires (yes the right ones) and my car still idles weird from time to time....I know it's PFC related...sometimes 750 rpm with 16 "vac....other times 750 w/11" vac sometimes 1000 rpm with 20 "vac.. most of the time with the first however....

From the mails I've read - if you don't cut the wires, or have then disabled in the unit itself, then the PFC will not correctly detect the two inputs that determine which idle setting to use.

In the "sensors" page unter "etc" there are two indicators for A/C and Electrical load. In the setup page for idle there are idle settings for when each of these is on and off. If the wires are not cut, then you should notice that the PFC cannot properly detect when there is electrical load - and will give you only one idle setting.

That is what I remember from what I've read.

I chose to remove the pins from the PowerFC rather than cut any wires on my car. Now if I ever need to to go back to my stock ECU I just unplug my PFC and plug my stock one back in. Not to mention if I should ever fell the urge to let a friend try out my PFC I don’t have to go hack up his car… rather just plug my PFC rite in.

Note should I ever have to use those pins that I have cut I have bought some pins from a local electronics store and can pull them through and solder them back in.

If you do decide to do this mod I recomend marking the pins that you are going to have to cut with a black pen. And then procide with caution. Note:I am not responsible for any damage to the unit that you might cause, if you cannot read the diagram mark pins and cut them appropriately, or the warranty on the PFC that you might void.
