I will let you know if I wind up regretting (I might) it but based on my research I got a used FD3S2 without a commander that is winging its way here from Japan. I personally want to tune it through the computer and plan to get a gauge for any data that I could glean from the commander, which is the most common reason I hear people keep it hooked up in their car. I was going to go with a datalogit but I decided instead to opt for the FC-Hako, since I do not even want to think about what it would cost if I needed the commander, so the total price not including the laptop I am writing on $682USD.
I would certainly not get a Power FC without some way to Initialize it. So either a laptop and some type of hardware interface device like a datalogit or FC-Hako or a commander.

I keep a netbook in my rear bin and a small power inverter so I have the ability to use FC edit anytime but I still find the commander very useful for quick things like the sensor check menu, tps adjustment, peak/recall display so I can run basic analog gauges, I always have ait running on the display, plus i find it alot safer to tune cruise afr's with just the commander if your by yourself in the car. Maybe just try to buy a used old version one from someone that upgraded to the new style display.
