IMO absolutely not. As long as you have the Datalogit, the Commander is simply a gee whiz decoration.

Commander is nice to monitor temperatures etc. Pretty sure you can get a commander for a lot less then $600

When I had PFC I had datalogit and the commander. I ONLY used the commander for monitoring while at the track, other than that its pretty useless. Setting up a 10" laptop or netbook in the car would be much more challenging for quick referencing.

I would look for a good price on a used one, and use it as a gauge.

I have a Datalogit but I use my Commander frequently, especially when I don't feel like breaking out the laptop for some minor change. It is my sole boost gauge in the car (I got tired of having multiple boost displays that didn't agree). I check the air and water temps on it all the time. I use the peak-hold function to display peak boost, rpm, and sometimes knock after a WOT run. I control boost with the PFC so I switch boost levels with that. I may also make small adjustments to warmup AFR's and cranking/warmup timing as the weather changes, or small idle speed changes if I am fiddling with that.

If you are going to take it to someone for tuning and won't be regularly monitoring the car's behavior yourself then I would only get one if you find a good deal. Having a laptop running every time you drive is a pain. You feel like you are launching a spaceship every time you go to 7 eleven.
