Base map discussion

I have just went single and was wondering if there was a good site or place for base maps. I will be doing all of the tunning on my own to get it close and then sending it to a "pro" for them to finish it up.

Thanks.

whatever pro you will go to will probably throw your map out. If they don't, it's likely they don't have a lot of experience tuning Rx-7's. BDC's website has some basemaps though.

I know that the tuner should have all of that. But i plan on tuning it myself and then taking it to a dyno and letting a pro work out the small kinks. I can safely save money this way.

BDC's site has some maps on it. BUT, if you are not rotary savy when it comes to tuning,
ka-boom could be your results.

by the time you are finished with most of your self-tuning, you will realize that the average local "professional" knows less than you do about tuning Rx-7's, especially when it comes to driveability settings and ignition timing. Look at how many "me and my local tuner can't figure out x idle problem/hesitation" threads are in the 3rd gen forum.

Having gone from carbs to EFI is the best OJT in understanding tuning!

+1. Be very careful with this. Like others have said in this thread, chances are the average 'tuner' guy at your local shop won't know what he's doing with this car. There's a reason why there's not many people who professionally tune these things and have half a clue about 'em.

You can grab a zip of base maps I've got up on my site as a starter if you'd like. Grab the Jan '09 one. http://bdc.cyberosity.com/v/Technica...d/PowerFCMaps/

If you have any questions about these particular maps, shoot me a PM, but you should be fine. Just pick the one that has the same injector and engine setup as you've got and you can use it as a starter to get the car goin'.

Well thanks for all of the concern about me and my motor. I feel as if i am ready to do this, and also i am great friends with dale clark and he will be teaching me all of what he knows about it as well... well as much as i can get out of him. I plan on going to tunning school as soon as i save up the money. But i did a good job tuning my car before. Small street port on stock turbos (10psi) made 339.7 hp and 252 tq

Sorry for the double post but the computer froze. But thanks for all the help. And i glad that someone can give information without flaming.

But i do know that people are just used to the normal noob with thinking that he can tune his own car... I fully understand the risks. This is the 2nd motor for my car that i have built.

Thanks for the concern man. But i am sure i have the knowlege to take care of all of these problems that might arise and also get it done right. I am conected with great people in the world of rx7's and if i get stuck, they are there to help. Thanks.

You'll be alright. I've tuned several Rx-7's now and am completely self-taught through practice and stuff I've gotten off the forums. But after learning so much about tuning I realize how few people you can really trust, and how much time really goes into making everything run as consistently as possible. I would look into the Chuck Westbrook tuning notes, get a datalogit, and hook your wideband into that.

I've actually had the best luck starting from the Apex'i basemap and then mixing matching settings and tables from all the various maps I've built or acquired. Every time I just load in somebody's .dat file I end up just scrapping most of it anyway.

Yup. The base mod Apexi map is ridiculously rich and has seriously retarded timing but is a great place to start tuning. With a Datalogit, a wideband, a knock sensor, and (ideally) dual EGT sensors, you can self-tune to perfection if you are not in a hurry.
