I undid then reconnected the battery and let it idle for 15mins. It runs much better the idle O2 volts went from .99 to .78 with no load. I guess most people disconnect the battery during the install like you should any way, and don't run into this problem.

 

Chuck Westbrook advised to hook up a 9-volt battery...no risk of overheating....within reason I imagine.
