So i was thinking on my way to school this morning...

due to my distaste for our horrible fuel efficiency (albeit it smooth and linear) what other engine swaps have been attempted besides the common V8s? i know of the 2JZ that was (blasphemously) put into the FD and the member on here who is putting a 7MGTE into his FC, but what else?

the few that came to mind are:
B series from miatas ,with a turbo/SC since they make little torque.

KL series from early FWD V6 Mazdas. this is currently used in RWD fashion in the Suzuki Grand Vitara.

VQ series V6s from nissan. this is pretty self explanatory.

Maybe i just haven't fully converted to rotaries although i understood them before piston engines.

also, these are only hypothetical excersizes since i doubt i would ever attain the money to achieve these ideas, and i'm the only one who'd probably do this.

Yea man the RX7 isn't a 7 without a rotary engine...the rotary just belongs there. If you wanna swap a piston engine in then go right along lol! But I think if you were gonna take the money and time to buy and install an SR20DET you would be better off swapping it into a 240SX. Just my opinion though! BTW if you want better gas mileage an ignition system like the Crane cams HI-6 can be had for less then $200 and usually gives 2-3MPG increase along with better acceleration response (cause of a stronger spark). Definetly a good mod.

So swaping a 13BT into a N/A car.. say a GXL be rice then? Since after all it's making the car something it isn't?

I think the reason most people swap V8 in there 7 is because it's cheaper. More bang for your buck.

Although I personly think a 7 shouldn't have its engine replaced by a piston engine.. but then again it can be quiet a beast with a piston engine.

Edit: If you want to save gas get a SAFC and it tuned.

Holy **** you guys totally misread that comment. It's common in the honda camp to ditch the stock d15/d16's for b16 and b18 engines. It's not calling anyone a ricer, only mentioning how prevalent engine swaps are for honda owners.....

Here we go again.
Anyways, my impression of rice is making a crappy ECONOMY car (albiet very well made) like a Civic, into a pseudo sports car by slapping on a bunch of whole buch of seperate componenst and expecting it to work..and sound like ****.
Doing up a true sports car, like a 7, 300z, or supra, isn't rice to me, cause it's already in the sports car genre.. unlike the Civic.

Yea I dont think it's rice to swap engines, I mean for example a lot of people with 2G DSMs swap the 1G engines into their cars because the 1G engines are built better and don't have problems with crankwalk. Are they ricers ? And actually most people with civics who swap B16s and **** aren't the ricers, they just have too much money to blow (i say this because civics take a lot of $$ to get fast in my opinion, and when somebody drops $3K on a civic hatch and another $3K on a swap and few other mods...and then gets smoked by a $2K rx7 turboII, its heartbreaking )! But whoever has the money and time and ***** to swap another engine (besides V8) into the 7, then good luck to you!

yo projekt, watch out for the rotary *****. dont ya know where you are ?!
and where's this "Crane cams HI-6 ... usually gives 2-3MPG increase" statistic coming from? like [i believe] noam chomsky said, "the first thing that should come to mind when someone says something is 'wait a minute, is that true?'"
i like challenging things because i prefer truth over hear-say, but also our cars have DIS which is a 'superior' ignition system (over most factory).

::this post took a minute to go through.. yall are seeming cool and less like rx-*****.. just wanted to say that.

um that is true about the crane cams and msd ignition amps however another thing you may want to do to increase fuel mileage and performance may be getting an safc so you can lean out the rich parts witch is good for both fuel economy and performance. I must be one of those "rotary *****" I don't think there should be any other engine in a seven besides a rotary. I know sometimes it may be tempting due to fuel economy and the age of the engine and the problems that come with that but these cars where built around the rotary engine hence the 50 50 weight distrabution. Throwing in a big v8 or any boinger for that matter throws off everything that I think this car stands for. A bit compulsive....maybe, but hey we have to be that way to love these cars

Just remember that an engine swap might not get you the fuel economy your actually looking for.....

Even if you swap in a relativly small displacement 4cyl engine(or even 6cyl) you might find yourself needing to kept the rev/throttle opening/(boost...?) up alot more than you used to with the 13b...

We do have relativly heavy cars, remember that..

Torque... Throttle opening.... Fuel economy... Weight...

Does the F20C actually spin in the right direction?

It's all about economics, an engine's potential is limited sheerly by the amount of money put into it. It's the whole "horsepower costs money, how fast do you wanna go" thing. A 13b could be built to outrun john force on the drag strip if enough money was spent (most likely in the millions of dollars), but it's more economical just to use a dinosaur 700+ cubic inch hemi (that'll only set you back a couple of hundred G's). We are given cars by the people who have the money and resources to make them, they are in no way custom tailored to every individual, so it is up to us to make our cars look and preform the way we want. Rx-7's look good, and are well built. It is not "rice, ricer, riceing" (loathe the terms) to swap in another engine, It's called hotrodding, it's been around since cars were first built.

Oh, and guy's, come on, you've all got to get off of this whole 50/50 weight distribution thing. Next time someone has a chance they should weigh their engine, fully dressed (with all the rotory specific stuff like coils, exhaust pipes, ect, ect,). How close is it to 450 pounds, the weight of a fully dressed LS1 400 hp V8 that gets 23 miles to the gallon? Rotorys arent feather-weights you know.

I'm thinking a 2.3l olds quad four would be a pretty cool swap, with cams, porting, and pistons 300hp is easy money (less than $1000). Try making 300hp in an N/A rotory for less than 1000 bucks, go on, I dare ya.

^^ THANK YOU!!!

Someone that actually takes the time to read the other threads on v8 swaps and understands that, altho the rotary engine is light in and of itself, it's accessories are not. Also, it tends to actually have most of the weight (in a rotary engine) higher up in comparison to a piston engine (who's weight tends to be center around the crank which sits lower in the engine).
I AM NOT SAYING EITHER ENGINE IS BETTER!!!
I am trying to abolish misinformation.

Am I the only one here who thinks that maybe spending thousands and thousands of dollars for better fuel economy is a somewhat silly idea? I mean, come on, put that $10,000 into gas, you'll have plenty!

I understand that there are other reasons to, but honestly, if its really that big of a deal, buy another car. Its the only way to save money, here

Umm, hello?
Fuel economy is a concern because fuel costs money.
Well, guess what: so do engine swaps. In order to do an engine swap correctly it takes money, easily over $5000.
How many miles are you going to have to drive before this swap becomes financially lucrative?

Given that your RX-7 gets a crappy 16mpg city, 20 mpg highway, and gas currently runs $1.65/gallon, you would have to drive 54,500 miles before your car starts saving any money whatsoever.

Really, fuel economy is a stupid purpose for which to commit an engine swap.
