Mazda RX7 FD3S 1JZ

Hello!
This is a build thread for my 96 1JZ RX7. I got the car from a friend last year already swapped to 1JZ by him. This is how the car was when I got it.

The car was running a 1JZ Twin Turbo with a Mazda Gearbox attached to it with a Stock Clutch and Pressure Plate. It also has a Fujita Engineering Exhaust 3" Straight Pipe from Turbos. Other then that the car was stock no gauges wideband etc.

One of the first mods I did was to get Depo gauges.
Water Temp, Oil Temp and Boost Gauge.

Now Oil Temp Gauge is in the center :P

I didn't like the kit that was on the car. It was a locally made Fiber C-West front bumper, custom skirts and rear spats.
I decided to go for the ING's+1 N-Spec Kit Front Bumper, Bumper and Side Step.

I couldn't fit the wheels I had with this kit as they used to touch the Side Step While turning. They were Sevas S-Star 19X8.5JJ wrapped in Altenzo's 245/35/R19. I miss those wheels :'(

Do you have any details on the swap process? What harness and subframe were used?

The engine is mounted on the RX7 OEM Subframe. Custom mounts were made on the subframe. Steering rack has not been lowered. I might have few pictures lying around will post them. The wiring and ecu is of jzz30. The gearbox bell housing has been changed to mate it to 1JZ. Everything works in the car speedo tach oil pressure gauge ac power steering abs sensors etc.

Some Pictures of the car lifted to show the underside how the engine was mounted.

Note: I mounted the engine on Mazda Subframe by making custom mounts on it. Engine has been just set 1" above the Steering rack. I have not lowered the steering rack. The Gearbox Bell Housing was cut and a R154 Housing was mated to it.

great views. would you be able to go into more detail about the mounts and how the transmission was modded? the spline in the fd trans goes into the 1j? what was your clutch solution? are you using the stock fd driveshaft? where do the mounts on the motor actually attach to the sub frame?

The Housing of the Rotary Transmission was cut and a R154 Housing was welded on. Clutch is Pull Type. Mazda RX7 Pressure Plate and RX7 Clutch Disc. Flywheel is 1JZ. I'm using an ACT Xtreme PP and ACT 6 Puck Unsprung now.

Drive shaft is stock and gear is mounted to the original RX7 Position.

I'll attach some pictures of the mounts too.

interesting.... the clutch from an fd mates to the 1j flywheel? no issues, it just bolts on? what method did you use when figuring where and how much to cut from each transmission? i would imagine cutting too little would cause the spline to not go into the engine and too much would cause the opposite. i cant really tell but did you modify the ppf at all? with the wire harness, what was done to get it to work? i would imagine some sort of splicing or something needed to be done. especially since you are able to get all the stock gauges to work. was there anything done to the fd charge harness to get this to work? is your motor VVTI?

Yes! Only few extra holes were made on the flywheel to mount the pressure plate. I'll see if I have pictures of the tranny. Once we cut the Bell Housing the gear was checked for clearance and spline going in and marked it then welded on the R154 Housing. Works perfectly

PPF?

Wire harness was uncut. Taken through the firewall and ECU is installed in the same place where Mazda ECU is. Yes the RX7 Cluster wires had to be spliced. Speedometer was connected to the Gearbox. RPM was Connected to ECU.
Oil Pressure was very simple. I just took 1 wire from the cluster directly to the Mazda Oil Pressure Sensor and it worked. Oil pressure sensor was installed on a gauge adapter for Oil Filter.

Motor is NON-VVTI.

Love the car with the kit, ductail and wheels. Only thing which looks ridiculous is the hood.

I love the idea of using the stock trans. I wondered about it when I did mine
