Lt1 into FD or 3.8 gn motor swap

I have seen alot of ls1 and some ls6 swaps but what about the lt1? Why not? Also what about the 3.8 turbo motor out of a gn into a fd. I tried a search and didnt really find anything. My apex seals are blown right now and i am trying to decide what i am going to do. Mind you that i have acess to a 3.8 gn motor for free right now.

If you can get the motor for free then do it. That cuts out alot of the cost right there.

I am just weighing my options right now. And im trying to figure the ups and downs of the swaps. I am on my 2nd 13b so i am basiclly done with the wobbly triangles. I have found a few fc's with the gn 3.8 but no fd's. I wonder what the wiring is like?

The GN swap would be pretty cool, but it isn't legal. You can't swap an engine that's older than the chassis. If that's a concern to you at all go with the lt1.

Plus, auto transmission only for the 3.8. That in and of itself is a deal breaker for me.

Remember that i live in michigan. those things dont matter here. We dont have emissons test and the cops dont care about swaps. They never look. But good point about the auto tranny's. I am leaning more toward the lt1 though. Could you tell me why i should go with the ls1 and not the lt1?

Google is your friend

LT1 300 HP/ 340 Tq
LT4 330 HP/ 340 Tq
LS1 345HP/ 350 TQ (that's the vette version, the F-body version is lower)
LS6 405HP/ 400 TQ

Those are pretty meaningless #s though. Anyone who goes through the trouble of swapping out a drivetrain isn't likely to leave the motor stock.

Unless you can get a smoking deal on an LS6, it'd be better to go with an LS1 and upgrade the intake and camshaft.

The LT1 will make power cheaper than the LS1, but at the penalty of extra weight. Unless you're stepping up to a Jimlabesque build, an ls1 is probably a better bet. Plus, there isn't a source for conversion cradles for the LT1 (Jim doesn't want to make them, and I wouldn't trust Granny's). The LS1 in the FD seems to get more and more popular these days.

Yup, the LT1 is iron, hence heavier.

If you want an ls1/t56 you should look for a pullout from a 99+ F-body. I got mine out of a 99 Firebird WS6.

I paid $4500 for a 99 with 8600 miles on it. It also had the exhaust manifolds, the complete intake setup, the pedals, a torque arm, and a driveshaft.

Edit: This was almost 2 years ago. It looks like prices have gone up a bit. If you look around you can find a decent deal here or there.
