Red face engine swap opinions please...

I haven't been on this forum in a long time...
But I have two nice first gen's and I want to commute in one, but both are too loud.
I don't want to put in a turbo and I won't keep both unless one is quiet. It doesn't have to be fast. I just want good gas mileage and a quiet ride.
I was thinking 4A-GE. I can make an adapter plate to mount it to the existing transmission or drop in the Toyota engine trans.
I'm guessing people are going to freak, but...
don't tase me bro

Thank!
Vin

Too loud? I've read many an exhaust thread and it always had different combos for the rotary engine to keep it mild, tolerable, and nice. Racing Beat, Borla, and Magnaflow all come to mind, depending on the setup.

Well...
That brings up a good point. Can anyone say what's the quiets combination of exhaust components and if it would be as quiet as say...
stock VW rabbit?
Thanks!
Vin

Hi Rotor13B,
Do you think any exhaust would be quiet enough?

Rotary engines have their own sound, due to their exhaust pulses. The quietest setup would be a completely stock exhaust. But, since that's usually out of the question for most, I'd strongly suggest using the Search function and use "exhaust" or "muffler" or other related words limited to only the 1st Gen section. I can't remember how people did theirs because everyone's is different. Some have 3" piping, 2 3/4", it varies. Then there's numbers of components, which maker, what items, etc.

For quiet, I'd say 2 1/2" with a Racing Beat header, Racing Beat presilencer, and a Borla muffler. Tho, this is just ONE of many combinations. And, believe me, there are a ton of exhaust threads out there. Hope this helps.

Hi 85 FB,
I have searched the treads and tried several combinations. In fact I tried the example you gave, except with a larger final muffler. It was still to loud. What do you use and how does it compare to a stock VW Rabbit?

Also, if anyone has input on swapping the 4AGE I would appreciate it!

Thanks,
Vin

Does a catalytic converter have a big effect with rotaries- I've never tried.

^ Why?

If you put a stock exhaust back on the decibels would be well within tolerable levels

I've had a stock exhaust too...
Do you really think it's as quiet as other stock cars?

Thanks,
Vin

The stuff that costs a lot of money are probably designed to for performance at the sacrifice of quietness.

Stock exhaust manifold and catalytic converter do quite a bit of muffling.

As for a swap? Electric motor would be quietest, and then you could do the tasing.

Actually, I bought the first RX7 to do a hybrid conversion, before you could buy a hybrid. But I fell in love with the thing and bought a second one.
