So did you modify the subframe and drop the rack (solid mounts or hinson kit)? Do you think the engine needs to be lowered less with Scoot hood compared to oem?

I am asking for a friend who is also trying hard to avoid tech2 hood. He modified the subframe to keep the stock hood but now his engine sits too low. Then he installed 19" wheels to raise the car up a bit but that didn't help. He's ok with scoot hood if he can close the hood without lowering the engine too close to the ground.

scoot hood give a lot more room.

I can't say for the Scoot hood, as I've never had or seen one.
To fit the 2JZ under the stock hood, you must lower the subframe and steering rack at least 2". (This assumes 16" wheel with a 245-45-16 tire.)

Compound that with lowering the car with lowering springs or coil-over shock suspension and you determine your tie-rod angle.

Total suspension geometry change is between 3.5 to 4".

Bump steer correction must be greater than the drop dimension through precise measurement, and is already greater than most kits limitation.

Does this mean the car will be unstable?
Not necessarily.
Some tie-rod angle compensation from a dramatic drop like that is better than no compensation at all. But when it comes to a performance car going over 140mph, I wouldn't want to take a chance the toe in/out moves when you load the suspension.

Just my take though.
After my build is done, I'll make another and test it.
The biggest fallback in my opinion would be the new rack is 4" off the ground, which seems very low.

Thanks for the replies Turbotito and MK3Brent.

Turbotito, ok scoot hood gives a lot more room but did you have to lower the subframe and rack, how and by how much (inches)?

With a 1.5" suspension drop and 16" wheels, your subframe will be 4" off the ground.
I didn't stutter.

mopar97 03-24-11 05:17 PM

oh yea, you right. forgot about the whole" aftermarket suspension set up".. 4" is fine man! hell my sr20det s13 i use to have the sway bar was like 1 3/4" off the ground lol..oil pan was like..idk 3 or something at most lol

i doubt anyone putting a 1j/2j in their car is going to keep the 16" wheels.
a drop is likely though, but combined with stiffer springs up front for the added weight, i think 4-5 inches clearance is still quite a bit.

i guess it all depends what youre used to. my old 383 stroker transam headers only had about 3 inches of clearance and i drove the hell out of that thing everywhere.

you just cant drive over speedbumps like a maniac, you have to actually slow down .... oh and quick reactions to avoid upcoming potholes is good too :egrin:

MK3Brent 03-25-11 11:53 AM

Wheel size was just for reference.
The tire has more defining numbers than any wheel.. It was just easier for explanation purposes.

Back to the thread now.

Good work, T.
You might not be the only 2J with a scoot hood now.. (Got mine last night.)

Is there no other alternative to replace the 90 intercooler coupler elbow that a lot of you guys seem to be using?

That's such a sharp bend in the air flow, ya know?

MK3Brent 03-27-11 01:59 AM

This one is also one of my favorite builds.

Keep it up, man.
I can't wait to see some videos of your FD.

its a 3 to 4 inch man. NO MATTER WHAT IM GOING TO NEED A REDUCER ILL TELL YOU WHAT THIS WHOLE COUPLER THING IS GETTING ON MY NERVES MAN NOT JUST YOU BUT EVERYONE. WHEN IM DONE AYONE THAT HAS A PROBLEM WITH THE COUPLER LET GO DO SOME HIGHWAY PULLS AGAINST EACH OTHER THEN COMPLAIN ABOUT IT AFTER YOU GOT TIRED OFF LOOKING AT MY TAILLIGHTS FORM A DISTANT. I CAN BELIVE THAT THATS WHAT EVERYONE IS COMPLAINING ABOUT. EVERYTHING BECOMES A RESTRICTION A A CERTAIN POINT. IN THIS CASE THE CAR IS TURBO CHARGED. THE AIR IS GOING TO BE PRESSURIZED INTO THE MOTOR . THIS WOULD BE A BIGGER RESTRICTION ON A N/A CAR. I DONT PLAN ON GOING TO THE POINT WHEN IT WILL BECOME ONE BUT IF I WANTED TO I COULD BEING THAT MY MOTOR IS BUILT TO HOLD 1400HP. BUT WITH 800RWHP THERE IS NOT GOING TO BE TO MANY CARS THAT ARE GOING TO BEAT ME. IM NOT TRYING TO HAVE THE FASTEST CAR BUT I DO WANT SOMETHING THAT IS DIFFERENT. AND THIS CAR IS. AND ITS NOT DONE IM GOING TO PUT SOME REALLY CRAZY SEATS IN THE CAR THAT BOTH ARE 12LBS COMBINED IM TRING TO FINISH THIS YEAR BUT WITH THE THINGS I HAVE IN MIND ITS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. ok im calm now please if i keep hearing about this damn coupler again im going to go crazy lmao.i can sit here and complain all day how a rotary motor is garbage but i dont.

There's no need to spaz out.

I'm a 2JZ-FD as well, friend.

It was a valid question, is all. Not my fault I'm only the 1,000,000th person to notice..

I have no doubt your car will still be fantastic, though.

BEST OF LUCK TO YOU ON YOUR BUILD, I'LL BE WATCHING! AAAAHHHHHH ALL CAPS!!!!

Sharp bends like that, especially in a coupler, are never really good.

Maybe you could re-do your intercooler piping a little? Just a recommendation..

Looks amazing, man. My only gripe is that 90-degree intercooler piping elbow you got there. That's a pretty air-restrictive bend to have in the IC piping...

It looks great, but that super huge 90-degree bend coming off the throttle body still really bothers me, man..

Did you not have any other option for routing the IC piping?

Man this thing is going to put a lot of supras to shame. Everybody is switching to huge single turbos

glad to see you're going twin ftw

Only thing about the twins though, is the sound.

Sounds completely different than every other 2J with a single.
Sounds V6 like.
