okay the stock 1jz water temp sending unit seem to work fine wired to the rx7 tach.

My motor runs nice and cool, very solid and steady on a 95* day.

The 1jz ignitor can be wired directly into the rx7 tach and it will work BUT the tach will read too high! There are plenty of solutions to fix this but i'm going to try and find the cheapest way possible :D

Drove it over 50 miles today and it's running great. Motor is strong and smooth, wish it had a little more low end but the top end power is impressive, though i never even took it past 5500 yet.

I'm very happy with the swap so far. Needs a lot more cleaning up and finishing work but the car is 90% there. Oh and it really needs a less restrictive intercooler! I'm using a TINY mr2 turbo intercooler just to get it running. Upgrade will come soon there!

Next will be the power steering high pressure hose and fixing the brakes. They were covered in rust when i got the car! They still work great but are noisy as hell...

More later

cheapest way is to adjust the tach, with the knob in the back...http://members.tripod.com/~grannys/rx7tachrecal.html i did mine as a v6 and so did my other friend with a jz swap, but with the series four we need to put a resistor in, but thats what the rev limiter is for, mine is about 200 rpm off, so someday i will solder in the resistor.

Sketch_hs 07-04-09 01:24 AM

Today I resurfaced the rotors, put some hawk HP pads and super ATE blue fluid. Not completely bed in yet but so far the brakes now feel AWESOME. Stock 4 piston front brakes are a nice thing.

Tomorrow i'll see if I can get the stock boost gauge working and the oil pressure gauge too.

Then i need to hook up the check engine light to the ecu, find someone to make a power steering line, trim the hood some more to fit nicer...

I've put over 100 miles on it now, running strong!

Video soon guys

Sketch_hs 07-06-09 06:05 PM

UPDATE

got the power steering line made locally for 48 bucks. Looks great and it's rated at 4000 psi! lol

i'll try it out when the engine cools down :D

Sketch_hs 07-06-09 08:46 PM

UPDATE!

tach is calibrated (might be reading a tiny bit low but it works a lot better now)

Power steering works! Wow the car is a lot easier to drive now. Unfortunately the steering is a little light for my taste, the supra pump is more powerful than the rx7s and the rx7s pump had a computer controlled servo motor that changed the assist. Overall it's much much better than no power steering. It almost feels like an electric assist rack...

parking lots are now a breeze.

in other news the PCV was completely shot, replaced it but it's still burning some oil from take off and revving in neutral. pretty annoying but i'm guessing it's just valve stem seals or something, compression and leak down test was near perfect and it idles perfectly smooth. Could also be a turbo going out... hopefully not the rings!

It's a common problem with the JZ series motors, especially over 60k and if the motor sat for a while which this one obviously did!

JebusFC 07-06-09 10:04 PM

Hey man, your swap looks sweet! Heres a bit of info on adjusting the P/S on a 1J in case you were interested, just went through this on my swap. Feels much better now. Takes all of about 10 minutes.

Find the pressure fitting on the pump, remove the hose then there is another fitting screwed into the pump. it needs a 24/25mm spanner. once this is removed you will see a valve, pull that out, behind that will be a big spring (pressure relief valve spring) cut a coil or two off this then reinstall as you pulled it to pieces then refill the system and try it. All this will do is open the relief valve earlier so more pressure bypasses the rack, giving less power assist.

I ended up cutting about 3/4 of mine off, but mine was fairly excessive to begin with.

Sketch_hs 07-07-09 06:02 PM

I changed the oil .. it was very dirty already because the motor sat. Also got the stock down pipe and welded that to the down pipe i had made from scratch. No more exhaust leaks and a nicer power band!

Seems to be burning a lot less oil now, hopefully it will go away on it's own...

Here are some new pics!

Custom high pressure power steering hose:

WHEEL RESTORATION!

They were really ugly and no amount of scrubbing could clean them :( so I naturally got the baddest wire wheel I could find and attached it to my angle grinder. About 30 mins per wheel and it looks a lot better!

BEFORE:

EWWW looked even worse in person!

AFTER

NICE!

Also see the cheap hood I got and cut to fit. Needs more trimming but closes for now!

:D

JebusFC 07-07-09 06:37 PM

Oh man....

Take off the front sway bar and lower the front of the engine, it will fit with stock hood with a little bit of trimming underneath.

take off the front sway bar? Are you nuts?!
lol

i'd rather trim the hood than remove the sway bar. function > fashion

Sketch_hs 07-08-09 04:13 PM

this is strange.

I did a compression test today, perfect results

180 - 180 - 185 - 180 - 180 - 180

Visual inspection of the plugs looks great, no sign of oil burning or anything else bad. Completely dry.

Visually inspected the piston tops the best I could, they are all very dry no sign of oil burning or leaking valve stem seals

Started it up and zero start up smoke (same as always with this engine)

Once it warmed up i did some neutral revving after letting it idle for various lengths of time. Very light smoke on some throttle stabs, nothing unusual and it was very faint.

Took it on the exact same drive today where it produced smoke visibly yesterday, today nothing! Same conditions, different results!

I'm starting to wonder if it's not just old carbon or leakage burning off... the tests and behavior is not typical of any particular kind of failure.

I still suspect the valve stem seals could use replacement. But as of right now it's not smoking noticeably, or on start up.

Aren't engines with unknown history fun?

I'm going to try and hook up the wideband and she just how she's running. Maybe put a cat back in the exhaust, it's kinda stinky :D

Sketch_hs 07-09-09 01:39 PM

50 more miles, smokeless! Good news.

I got a nice high flow cat for it last night... going to put it on soon

LS1sevenFD 07-09-09 01:46 PM

man that is going to be wicked

CAPTN_SLAPPIN 07-09-09 02:24 PM

wow! amazing. where did you get the 1jz? and how much was it?

Sketch_hs 07-09-09 04:21 PM

osaka motors in canada

2100 shipped came with everything

Sketch_hs 07-10-09 11:14 AM

UPDATE:

http://www.autogassolutions.co.uk/fi...ng_signsvg.png

I put the high flow cat on and it works great! Smells really clean, quieted it down a bit and a slight loss in power and spool. Worth it for me right now, i'll gain that and more back later with a nicer downpipe, high flowing catback and turbo y-pipe + more boost and a nice FMIC!

It is however leaking a little bit from the transmission :( I suspect output shaft seal where the drive shafts slip yoke goes in. I have a part already... guess i have to do that today!

Sketch_hs 07-11-09 03:37 PM

UPDATE:

Transmission leak fixed. Tiny slit in the tail shaft seal. Fortunately I was able to replace it with the transmission on, just pulled the drive shaft and I was able to get to it.

While I had the y pipe off to get to it I noticed it had a huge crack so I welded it up. Now the exhaust sounds way better, pulls a little smoother and it's actually VERY quiet with that and the cat on there. Too quiet really, sounds like a stock camry or something until those turbos start to spool.

Also the low end feels a little more torquey... got a little sideways in a corner today :D

Engine seems to have completely stopped burning oil. Very happy about that.

I'm planning on taking it up to tahoe with the wife next week. Should have some good video footage and pics of the adventure, hopefully all goes well!

decided to clean up the hood a little more, nothing final but looks nicer for the time being.

Going to add some kind of stock looking scoop or grill to it later...

This was all done by hand with a angle grinder (flap disk) and some crappy sandpaper + spray paint. Hood was already spray painted when i got it so whatever.

Areas cut under the hood, little more than needed. Took this picture before cleaning it or painting so you can see where i cut a little more clearly:

And the top cleaned up:

restrictive mr2 intercooler (lol) and stock FC exhaust really holding it back on this run.

Notice how laggy the speedometer is!

Parts from a local car, $100 for everything :D

The carpet isn't new, just thoroughly cleaned. I went over this.
