well i want to part out my 71 rx2, but at the same time i want to keep it. I doubt I will ever get the title for the car. I could do 3 things. 1) part out the whole thing. 2) keep it all intact and make a autocrosser out of it. 3) sell it whole if i am able to get a title.

thoe body is in okay shape. i mean it has less rust than my 72. but lacks a good interior. the car once had a 13b in it, and is basically set up for aonother one to go in. However all this is great but I lack a garage to do all this work in. I also lack funds to buy the needed parts to work and fix up two cars. To go even further, I feel that the 72 i have should be restored by somebody much more qualified than me. so maybe i should jsut sell that one and work on the 71 and hope I get a title for it. hey just a question if you dont mind, do you know why the 71 does not have a title? is it just lost? and how much do you think you would sell it for w/o title?

i would take offers on it as it is for sure. the guy i talked to said he got it with out a title in the 80's but it was still registered in the mid to late 90's in Washington.

at the dmv they told me to call the washington dmv and get a letter stating that the car wasn't in there systems anymore then i can get an oregon title for it upon a vin inspection from the oregon dmv, inwhich i would need to rent a flat bed trailer so i wouldnt need a trip permit and insurance to tow it. unlike with a tow dolly i would need both cause a wheel would be touching the road.

My suggestion would be depending on what you paid for the Car if it was pretty cheap I would just keep it.You will never lose money selling it or parting it out.These Cars are very hard to find in ANY condition.Cover the Car with a Really Good Car Cover and work on trying to get a Title.If and when you have exhausted every avenue then Sell or part it out.Just my opinion take it for what it's worth.

Personally, I think he should part it out. But that's because I'm selfish. Honestly, though, I've tried having two similar project cars, but you'll want to put your money into the nicer car, whichever you determine that to be. I'd much rather have one car with twice the money in it rather than two beaters, neither of which will get the attention it deserves. I'd try to sell it whole, just because parting it can suck. If nothing else, tear one down, pick from all the best bits and pieces (work your good car up for free) and part the leftovers. Of course, if you need to sell a hood, you know who to call.....

everybody makes a good point which leaves me exactly where
I started, However what I think I will do, is keep one and fix it up,
and sell the other either whole or in pieces. Now the question is,
Would you rahter have a project with nicer interior, or less rust. A
title or hoping to get a title. The orange one or the red one. a mostly
stock 12a rx2 with all the bolt on goodies (header, full exhaust, new carb,
suspension) or a 13b rx2 with all that same stuff with a not as good
interior but with no rust to fix jsut a few dings and dents. Thansk Matt22

 

oh and to help with those that might not know. the red one is the 71 with out a title, not so great interior and set up for a 13b,
and the orange one is the 72 with a title, and really good interior. but with rust, which i am sure is fixable like all things.

I'll put my Two Cents in Keep the Orange Car.Oh and as long as Crit said it first I could use A Windshield,Chrome Door Sills and Capella Emblems.

 

I would definitely keep the red one if the title weren't an issue. Why don't you make your weekend project 'getting the title' or determining if you even can. The interior bits are very swappable, and you'd be happy to have the 13B, I'd think. Call the DMV and find out, for sure, if you'll ever be able to get a title, and whether or not it's necessary in your state. GA didn't keep a central record of titles until 85. When I went to KS, I took my GA tag for my 85 to them. They looked up the GA tag laws and cut me a fresh KS title for the car, which I later transferred back here to GA. If you can get the title, then start unbolting seats, door panels, and dash. You can have the good interior installed and the other sitting in the orange car within a day, easy.

 

BTW, you keep saying that the 71 is 'set up' for a 13B. Does it have an engine? Tranny? What's up with it? Is it just a header and engine mount sitting under the hood?

 

it used to have a 13b in it, the exhaust is all there, as well as a tranny. jsut needs a motor, which i have a good running 88 rx7 motor lined up for 300 bucks. But i do need to sell one of them as my father is getting rather upset as his house being my parking lot. let me know if your interested in an entire car, or jsut want parts.

 

I'd get killed if I brought home a car. As much as I'd love nice parts, may I reccomend that you take the best of your stuff for whichever car you keep? It really wouldn't take a day to swap the orange interior parts into the red. That said, I need a hood badly if you decide to part it out. Well, that and bumper brackets. PM me on the side if you decide to part it out, would ya?

If your gonna keep The Red Deuce,Part out the Orange after you take what you need to upgrade the Red Car.Then,after Crit gets his hood he so desperately needs you can sell me the Windshield,Chrome Door Sills(if you have them)and Capella Emblems.I also need an original set of seats but i think it would be a little pricey to Send UPS.PM me also if you decide to part out one of those Bad Boys!

Matt, I was thinking about your situation today. I suggested earlier that you stick with the red car because of the rust, plain and simple. Seeing as you don't have the facilities to really work on the car much, I can see why you'd keep the orange. As I understand it, it's drivable, has a title, and a nicer interior. If you ever get to painting it later on, I'm sure you can go rust-chasing then, so I guess it depends on the amount of rust. I'd think that the best way to go would be keep the drivable one and not bite off more than you can chew, you know?

 

well you can enter the trunk from underneath . there are some pretty big holes in the turnk area as well as some good rust below the windshield and rear window on the 72

 

Sounds, then, like you just have a tough choice. Or cut the VIN off the 72 and put it on the 71 - it's not like you don't own them both, anyway. Do you know for sure if the 71 can be retitled?

 

Crit Your makin this poor boy Nuts! You bring up a good point though It might make more sense to just piece meal one car together & use the Vin from the Orange Car.Then Part out what's left.Although at this Point I Think Matt is Makin hid Ole Man Nuts!

 

Yeah, I know what you mean. Rust is a big enough deal that I'd almost always go for the chassis in better shape, but it looks Matt would be happier with a running car that he can drive and get a few points with Dad. As far as VINs go, nobody ever checks them on these cars, except when they change hands. No inspections or emissions, so as long as you have pics to show a prospective buyer, I doubt you'd run into any trouble. Hell, if nothing else, keep both VIN tags so that if you can title the orange car in the future, you could just swap 'em back and go legit.

Matt, I should trade you my Oregon Rx2 w/o a title for your Washington Rx2. It is often easier to title a car if it is not from out of state.

Another idea...
Years ago I have an Rx2 in Cali that I could not get smogged. So, I unscrewed the vin plate (yes it is just screwed down) and swapted it with plates to another car that has smog eqp. I took it in and got it smogged. Then swapted the vin and license plates back.

Just maybe, ytou could find a good running Rx2 in your areas, swap plates and title the other car with you numbers. Well, it is just a thought.
