I know this has been done before but searching the forum couldn't fint anyone here that did it unless I've been looking at things wrong. I would like to do a 3 rotor conversion on it as the title states. Also do all the early 240z/260z/280z share the same body and suspension? What about interior? Also how easily would it be adapted on there? I'm trying to find a good body in the time being and just place it in storage till I have the time to play around with things My FB still needs much attention. A little of my backround on my FB to see what i'm trying to achieve:

85 GSL
12a SP
Fully repainted body inside out
IRTB in a sidedraft.
All interior redone to 2 shades of tan.
Lots of powder coated goodies in the engine bay
Rack and pinion
T2 Brakes
Camber

So basically the lot ... and the fairlady will get the same attention. Shoot it up and with any pictures you have too.

 

Even though the 280z was my first favorite car, I'd rather do a 20B in a 1st gen. I can help you with that, but I don't know anything about the z cars.

 

Try to find a 240 early 260s they where the lighest The 280s have the big truck bumpers=more weight. The rear ends got bigger in the 280s r200 I think but can be easly swapped into the 240s.

btw I have a nice set of metal FairladyZ emblems off a 240 that I brough back years ago. I might sell them

 

So the 240 is the lightest cool, I'll keep that in mind, do you know actual weight difference?

 

I like the idea and think it would be an awesome car. Keep in mind though that it will be a ton of work and probably not very easy to sell when you are done. A small block Chevy is a popular conversion for the Z cars. It is quick, simple, cheap and very easy to sell when you are done.
The same work/effort into a third gen would make it very easy to sell, perhaps even at a profit. You will loose money on the Z car swap.
I know you are thinking right now that you will never sell it but take it from someone who knows, there is always another project in line when you finish.
Save yourself the trouble and money and just buy a turbo rotary Porsche 911. I could have sold my car a hundred times over if I had gone the small block Chevy route and even made a profit.

 

I agree. Don't put a 20B in a z car.

Do you have a 20B yet? Are you lookng forward to spending 4500 on an engine that needs a rebuild? A 1st gen or heaven forbid even a 2nd gen would be a lot cooler and far more sellable when you're done.

PercentSevenC wanted to do a 4 rotor in a z car. I think I talked him out of it.

If you must get a z car, either build the straight six or do a chevy V8.

 

lol 3 rotor in a Z, so I'm guessing it's gonna be a show car if you ever finished the project...(that 240z is light man, even when you throw a v8 in that pos you'll never gain traction again and that's just in neutral!)

 

Thanks for the feed back guys, and I do understand loosing money, and actually I was looking at 2 engine swaps for it ... either the turbo 3 rotor, or an inline 6 rb20/rb26 engine with also turbo. I'm just trying to figure out what would be nicest to do.

 

There's a guy here in Los Angeles that does an RB26DETT conversion in old 240's....around $6000 I believe. That is the ****.

 

yeah not in a Z. That's like dropping an LS1 in a 7.

Put that in an SA or RX-3.

unsure yet ... but i think that I'm leaning towards the rb26 ... and maybe just try to get a cosmo down the road and enjoy it just stock

Funny you say that .. we had one of those car ... and then we moved on to one of the newer opels that looked like a crx.

 

Theres a thread on one of the Z car forums, I cant remember which one, where a guy did a 13bt in one. Talk about wieght distribution. Those engine bays are so damn long, the ENTIRE motor sits behind the strut towers. You could do a v-mount very easily, and have almost no piping. not to mention a 13b probably weighs less than half of that huge iron 6 banger. Just do a 2 rotor, wont be too expensive, and youll have a really light, and theoretically awesome-ly handling car.

 

wat i wish i could do is a 20b '65 1600 fairlady z. just my dream car.

 

I'm gonna pimp him out again.... Doug has put everything into a Z car. There's currently discussion of putting a Jaguar V12 into one... just to see what happens.

 

If money is no object then by all means, I say go for it. I've been wanting to do a 13b-re swap into a Z for a couple years now. The list's goes on and on though from what I've read.

Part's list:
Engine: 13B-RE or S5 13BT, they fit the best
Tranny: 2nd gen TII tranny, fitment is perfect
Turbo: Single turbo, any choice, Stock Twins won't clear the frame rail
Custom motor mounts
Custom exhaust
Custom driveshaft
R200 rear end, 5x114.3, rear disk from a 280z
And on and on....

If you take your time to do it right, it'll be a project well worth it. And yes, the engine bay is huge enough to fit a V-Mount set-up. With more room to spare. If you don't believe me, just take a look.
