Transaxle setup.

ok, so my dad and i have decided to possibly make a mid engine roadster style rotary car. we will probably build it up from a 1st gen MR2 chassis. I was wondering what mods would have to be done to a transmission like that to make it fit a rotary engine, if it's even possible. also, can a 6 port be carborated? we will most likely use either an s4, or an s5 6 port 13b. thanks for any help.

Ahh crap! I've been wanting to do this sort of project forever! I'd assume that you would have to custom fab the bellhousing to the transaxle to mate to the transaxle. I very faintly remember seeing somewhere online that carried "adaptor plates" for all sorts of engines to all sorts of transmissions/transaxles. I cannot remember the site at all though.

Yes, a 6 port can be carborated(sp?). RacingBeat carries a kit: http://racingbeat.com/resultset.asp?PartNumber=18045

What transaxle are you looking at using?

That is going to be extreme, keep us updated as you move along! I have a friend with a 1st gen mr2, he's going to 20v turbo it. But if we can find a 1st gen chassis we were goign to put my s4 na engine in since it's blown. Oh well... keep us updated.

It wont work unless you have some extra cash laying about. The exhuast port ends up right where the axle would be. Im not saying its impossible, but many have tried and failed.

This is how i spent some occasional time and money:

There is enough clearance for the driveshaft.

This is an 12a
You have to make an bearing mount for the driveshaft. If i'm right the toyota bearing will be located in front of the exhaust port.

I am using a custom made drive shaft and the bearing will be at an different place.

The 3s-ge tranny i use will be bolted to an adapter plate

Get good insurance, call me when its done, I got to see this.
I had a gen1 mr2 that made a little over 180 and that thing was a blast! Scary sort of blast!

Absolutely perfect work!

didnt think of that. probably have to have a custom header made that can clear it.

Hmm that setup is different than most I have seen. But how are you gonna bolt up an exhaust mani or header with the bottom studs being covered by the axle, and not much clearence(sp)

You don't need an exhaust manifold.

There was a Honda Civic with a PP 12A for sale in NewZealand or Australia... They used a Toyota Corona tranny.

I'd use that setup.

i think once i get the engine and the transaxle, ill be able to judge how things will match up better. i also have a concern about mounting the engine. what mods will need to be done and such.

and id love to have a rotary powered civic. that would be the most shocking thing a honda lover could ever see probably.

What about doing a Rotary 914? Then you could just buy an adapter plate for a VW. Just a suggestion. You may want the added challenge.
