Are they comparable to the V8's you see out there now?
I want to build one but im not sure how to get the low end torque required to shoot up the hills. Dont wanna get stuck in a bowl.

They do 20b conversions into sand rales.

Rotary sandrail
I have a sandrail set up with a 12a. It has had a few bugs, but I think I'm finally on the right track.
It is a stock port 12a, Dellorto DHLA side draft, custom header with spiralflow muffler, vw irs transaxle with 4.12 r&p. The first trip to the dunes was rather disappointing, due to overheating and lack of power.
Since then, I have found that the prev. owner had the dist. one tooth off, and radiator almost completely plugged. I have restabbed and timed it, and replaced the missing vacuum lines, and it will smoke off one of the 30" all terrains now! I am now swapping the transaxle for a 5.38 r&p. The paddle tires are a bit taller, and with the lack of torque, it needs a low low gear to keep the wheel speed up.
It is really loud!
