my friend told me about an rx3 that is sittting in a field that i could tow away and nobody would care...im going to have to do that. up here on the plains there is a lot of good old cars just sitting around. my friends and i are going to try to find some land to purchase so that we can start buying mass quantities of cool old cars and save them from the crusher.

Rotary Loco
Thats a good idea
There was a junk yard about an hour from me with 5 old school rotaries, plenty parts.
one day I went to look for some small stuff and all the cars were gone, the owner told me the price for the scrap metal was too good to pass , $120.00 a ton so he crushed them !!
If I knew I would bought them all!!!

I'll take the manuals. I'm scanning everything I can find, publishing as a .pdf, and posting them on vintagerotaries.org so the rest of the world can have 'em. These manuals are getting scarce. Are they still in decent shape? Any pics?

Here's Mine
Hello
Here is mine
36000 original miles, and 100% paint, and interior. Nothing has ever been changed.
I also have all the original Mazda Shop Manual, Emmissions Book, Transmission Guide, and RX4 Delaer OE Parts Catalog. Mazda Canada sent me it all when they saw pictures of my car. If anyone ever needs any help restoring one I can try and help with pictures of whats correct since mine is original or scan a page of the manual.
Regards
Max

so, i guess i have some questions for you guys...
1. what makes a rotary engine smoke like a piston engine that needs new rings
2. how hard is it to find rebuild kits for these carbs, or is it easier to swap to a holley/edelbrock/other mainstream carb
3. is there any seals that will deteriorate from sitting for long periods of time? i know the waterpump is leaking, but i dont know what other seals this thing has.

Reason for smell and failure

A very helpfull member by the name trickshot had this to say:
Quote
"The #1 cause of engine failure is a leak in the coolant seals. You need to read up on this in the FAQ and also read various internet materials on buying a used RX-7, esp. FD's.
Why do coolant seals fail? A specific and general reason has never been pinpointed, although various contributing factors have been noted.
THIS IS WHERE LOW MILEAGE CAN HURT.
It's the anti-corrosion protection in anti-freeze that wears out. In addition, anti-freeze needs to circulate in the engine. If it just sits there the water starts interacting chemically with the metal. If the anti-freeze is more than two years old and the car has been sitting through the winter without being started who knows what's gone on inside that engine?
If the coolant seal leaks, antifreeze leaks into the combustion chamber and eventually the engine will stop working.
a sign...
The engine should be started up from cold. If there's a big cloud of white smoke that has the sweet smell of anti-freeze then it has a coolant seal leak. That will require an engine rebuild
End Quote

well...currently i dont have a spare hood, if i pick up that yellow car then i will have a spare. i have no idea how much RX-4 hoods are worth, im coming from the world of escorts to the world of oddball rotarys. if somebody can give me an idea of how much a hood is worth we can go from there

Man thats a sweet *** four Max, reminds me of how rare they've become nowadays, although when I was younger, they were plentiful in Los Angeles where I grew up and people would pass on them because they were so much heavier than 2's and 3's. I personally liked them and cosmos plenty though and owned 2 rx4's and a couple of cosmos back when they were less than 10 yrs old and in great condition except for your standard "blown" engine of course...which we would promptly fix with a nice used jspec 13b cosmo na motor("76-"78) from Kwatanabe($350). Hope you put your rx4 on the road for some fun. Tom G
