Congratulations on a good find!

Yeap the steering column looks different but it will grow in you.

Also the colors Mazda painted them didn't help.

Whats the plan? make one out of two?

As you will learn RX-4's are hard to find so its smart to keep the second stash away for parts need it.

I hope to see more pictures and keep us update on the status.

Hello

I liked the steering but the color was not my taste.

I painted black to subdue the sharp angles on the column cover.

Before

After

thanks for the support guys! i havn't decided what i will do with the second one yet. one car has 45ishK on it and the other has 55ishK on it. it would be nice to keep one as a parts car, but they are both so close to being complete that it seems like a waste to me....so i dont know. ill keep everybody updated, and i will be asking lots of questions, as these are my first rotary cars..ever

ahhh....so my first question. what are the odds of getting one of these engines to run without rebuilding it? one car has 45k on it and the other has 50k...however they have been sitting for a long long time. one was last registered in 83 and the other last registered in 81. do these engines seize ever? the good news....one has a brand new air filter!!(i dont know why thats good)

spin the engine from the front crank pulley and see if they turn over..
if you have to use a socket and breaker bar..
Make sure you pour 1/4 of ATF in the carb first ..

if it spin over by hand cahnge the motor oil...ad another 1/4 ATF through the carb spin the engine by hand and let it sit for a 1 day or 2...then go ahead and crank it over ....
Replace the fuel filter and fuel..
I have started engines that were totaly stuck..

I think I remember seeing your post on HomeMadeTurbo. Thankfully, you have just found a forum full of people who actually know something about the rotary and don't just spout off misinformation and racism. Good find with the cars.

This bit of information may help you get a car that has been sitting for a while working again. It mainly deals with the 2nd gen but the information for the engine is valid with any rotary:

http://www.aaroncake.net/rx-7/unstore.htm

Also, don't use ATF. It's very corrosive to the rubber seals and really doesn't dissolve carbon. Just use motor oil. All you are trying to do is lubricate the sealing surfaces to avoid a dry start and build some compression, which regular oil will do quite well.

ok so i got them pulled out of their near grave last night, went back today to check them out better. first off, i have no keys...at all....this is a problem. well i tried to turn them over by hand, one turns freely...almost too freely for my likings, however, from what ive been reading, these engines need some oil to build compression...so im not too worried. the other one is stuck so far...ill dump some oil down the carb to see what will happen. i will take better pictures next time i go out to see them. one car has some very small rust areas, and has had some body work in the past, the other one looks completely rust free. i also found a spare tail light in the back of one of them(the rear seat back was pulled foreward a bit. i also found some rx-2 and rx-3 manuals in the back seat...if anybody wants them, ill be happy to give them to you....unless someone tells me they will be useful on the rx4. all the lights work on one car, i didnt try the other one...one of the hinges is stuck, so i cant get the hood to open all the way...they both have the original square exhaust tip, but i am curious what the extra muffler/exhaust pipe thingy is next to the real muffler. im getting more excited guys. and just so everyone knows...when i decide which car im going to keep, the other one will probably be up for sale once i get all the parts swapped. i dont really want to keep a complete parts car of a car that ive never seen before...at least not one thats already boned.

one more question for ya..what are the odds of making one of these run after 20 years of sitting?

Im about 99.99% sure that it will take more than the usual "oil thru the carb" treatment. Remove the exhaust and check the condition of the seals.

Do you think that the mileage is actually 45K or 51K? Most likely the mileage is 145K or 245K and 151K or 251K. If these cars had such low mileage on them, they would not have been abandoned. Nice find and you got a steal of a price. Take your time fixem them up. You can always sell one to make money to finish the other one up. Good luck.
