RX-2 Coupe Windshields - who's up for a group buy :)

Okay, I've found new RX-2 windshield in Aus for $140 apiece. Problem is, it takes $600 to ship it because it's in an incredibly well-protected 6-cavity crate. If I can find some people to help fill my box, we can get new glass without paying an arm and a leg. If you're interested, please don't PM me, but rather post in this thread. I'm going to talk to Iowa Glass tomorrow (the guys that have sedan glass in the US) to see if they'd be interested in helping me fill my crate. If we get a number of responses here, I'll refer them to this thread and we can verify how many buyers we have. If we can fill one or two crates, we can perhaps even get a slight price break, especially if Iowa wants to work out a deal with this aussie supplier.

Let me know if you're interested and I'll see what we can work out.

rx2 windshields

although I just purchased a used windshield (not cheap) I would have rather bought a new one, as the restoration is definatelly deserving of new glass.

stilll months away from paint and final assembly.... I would love to go in on the group buy!! please count me in for one. I thought about trying to do this myself, as I was in australia a few times the last two years.. other stuff on my mind at the time (girl)...

so the numbers you are quoting are US... (although the excahnge rate is getting worse and worse) and the 600 for shipping would be split 6 ways as well? (roughly)

...and its strange, I just bought a datsun 510 windshield from the guys at Iowa glass!

Well, the dollars quoted are AUD, so it would be a little cheaper still, but I'm not sure about the shipping. I'm not willing to front the cost of all this and have six windshields shipped to me. Even if I were, do I then mail 5 of them to the next guy on the list? There's only one crate for these things to migrate around the country in. I'd like to see if one of the Aussies' US partners or Iowa would be willing to buy a crate or two and resell to us. If not, we just need someone in the US willing to handle all this and we can split the spoils once they're in-country. I'm in an apartment and rebuilding the car in a rented garage, so I don't have the facilities to coordinate any of this. I'll see what Iowa and the Aussies have to say in the morning. Hell, Iowa has 5 sedan windshields in stock, and Coupes outsold Sedans 8-to-1 here in the States. Maybe they'd like to stock a few.

they give you a quote on sedan glass?

ask Iowa to recieve the crate, ship the 5 out to us seperately (for a handling/packaging fee) and ship yours back in your crate...

had them ship my 510 windshield to a local glass shop, the owner was cool with me just coming by and picking it up.

Iowa is telling me that they might have some glass stateside, which would be much cheaper. He's looking into it, but we need to contact Rick at Iowa to verify how much demand there is out there. He'll consider reselling glass from Australia if we'll contact him directly and get on 'the list', but a domestic supplier would be, like, super excellent.

Any interested parties please call Rick at 800.553.8134 and leave your number with him. He's looking to buy up the domestic glass if it's available and will consider the Australian stuff.

Jesuscookies, give Rick a call and see if he's in the ballpark. We only need a few buyers to make it worthwhile. I absolutely hate group buys, but it's ridiculous to spend 5-times the value of the glass in shipping.

Everyone needs to contact Rick separately in order to do this right. It's not fair for me to ask him to do this if he can't verify that he has buyers for the glass. He went through his records to see how many requests he had for the glass in recent years and has a number in his head (which he didn't share with me) of how many he'd like to stock, since he'd be the sole US source.

As far as price goes, that can only be determined once we know what we're buying. Rick indicated that he'd sell us the glass without marking it up much, but most of the cost will still be due to shipping so we need to fill the crate. If you wait, hopefully you can call later and pay his markup to buy whatever he stocks.

It's helpful to see on the forum how many people are interested, but PLEASE contact Rick directly at 800.553.8134 if interested so he knows we're not going to stick him with 1 or 2 crates-worth of glass. I personally need a windshield in about 3 weeks, so I'd like to finalize a list next week and get something on a boat, but the timeline is still up in the air.

I don't want to beat a dead horse, but of all the people that have said "I'm down" or "put me on the list" need to call Rick. The only list is the one in Rick's hand of people looking to buy a windshield. As of Friday afternoon, he's only heard from one person other than me, so this won't happen at all at this rate. Y'all.... please call Rick.

This guy Rick has a good bead on nearly everything. Give him a try. If any vintage glass shop has it, Rick'll know. Mention the forum, too.
