yeah i don't think it's going to be that they are going to be selling crate motors it's more like you are going to have to be hitting the junkyard looking for wrecked RX-8 with a running motor.

anyways, that would be a very difficult swap to get running because the Renesis so much more advanced than the 13B of the RX-7's. I'm not saying it can't be done, it's just going to be a lot more work than a straight motor swap.

Would it be possible to order a "replacement" Renesis engine? Y'know pretend like you blew it and you want a new one.

You can get a complete motor (less than $5K NZD I understand), or any of the parts (the rotors are much cheaper than the turbo ones), and even brand new 6 speed g/boxes.

you can get a pullout from a wrecked car from mazmart. i *believe* they're in the $3500-4k range totally complete with manifolds, ecu, sensors, harness, etc etc..

re10 is right on some of the stuff, also i think that Atkins Rotary had a line on some complete new renesis engines from mazda for about 5k USD, if I remeber correctly it did include all of the manifolds as if it was a complete engine but i don't think it had the harness or maybe it had the harness but no computer. As for the rotor set, I wouldn't hold my breath on if it will work with the older engines. According to what i saw (from new pieces) we can not use any previous rotors in a Renesis (or else i would have built one using turbo rotors and boosted the hell out of it)

Now here is where it gets sticky, the side seal placement is differnt, they added a 3rd oil seal and shortened the height of the apex seal......... how will this affect an older motor, well with our different porting it might just be in the wrong place, ya know like if you screw up when porting a bridgeport or if you break the bridge out of a bridge port all the sudden you sucked in a seal or 2 and oh well get a new engine cause you are going to need at least a rotor housing and rotor.

I have said it to others before (even though my daily driver is an Rx8) I am not highly impressed with the fact that it only makes 245hp you can easily swing that out of a turbo or s/c 13b and still have much better fuel mileage I know I have one. Look at me like I am crazy all I have to say is look that the lifespan difference between an 86-88(s4) NA 13b and an 89-91(s5) NA 13b the older engine (s4) much more forgiving and less prone to failure granted not as much HP but you have to look at the big picture. For me I think the perfect renesis would be.... back out some of the compression and add a supercharger give me 300 peak HP, if my foot ain't in it yea i probably will only have 245 HP but i don't need more than that all the time plus i bet it would squeeze a few more MPG out of it.

of course all of this is IMHO

Oh yea and if you think you can just go down to the dealer and order up a REMAN core, guess again they have to have the VIN# of the Rx8 because that is now a trackable item, also even though the core engine ie short block... (help me MAZDA parts gods I know you are watching this) costs about $2500 they are going to ding you with a $1000 core charge and probably shipping to the dealership as well. Additionally I don't know that the Mazda warranty would be effective so if you pop it you now have a $4k paperweight.......

No flaming intended just I don't want any confusion out there I have been through many of these same issues.

i'm working on that. should have them ready for sale by the end of the year.

side seals being closer to the edges allow for more port timing advance on the intake, and a later closing on the exhaust. in addition to the timing, the ports can be (and are) made larger.

the scraper ring helps protect the oil control rings from the exhaust heat, as well as keep pressure out of the crankcase, and obviously, oil scraping.

and the shortened apex seals like to warp when they travel over peripheral exhaust ports at high rpm's. i'm not sure how they would work in a low rpm (<8k) engine though. may be fine, may warp anyway. but you can machine them to accept older apex seals.

so if you dropped some renesis rotors with rx7 apex seals into your n/a, you'd be able to open your intake ports up a bit without the side seal falling in. there's power in that.

I've seen them complete with harness for 2500-3000 in wrecked cars sitting in junkyards. I would be VERY tempted to pull off a swap and streetport, as that would make an amazingly badass N/A that would rival a 20B N/A, but alas, I've no money.

dunno, but i have one for sale if you wanna try

get me the measurement from the back of the shifter to the front of the bellhousing on your fc tranny and i'll measure the rx8 tranny so you'll know how they compare.

You said the back of the shifter? How about the center of the shifter hole? I've got an FC tranny sitting here.

As near as I can figure, it's 33"

I understand what you are saying about the port timing of putting a set of renesis rotors in in an older engine, what my questions is.... why would you want to do that same gain can be made with forced induction at cheaper cost. I want to go the other way and reduce the compression on a Renesis so i can use forced induction on it.

I agree on your findings dealing with the rotors(renesis) and seals how they warp etc. I would not trust them in an older engine unless you could use the older taller seal But i truly believe that there are more gains available in a renesis if we were able to use a more "conservative" rotor with forced induction. We don't need tons of power every second on the road that is where my money would be.

i admit that the Rx8 is an awesome chassis handles like a dream do i want more power sure i do but i don't need it all the time and i don't want to sacrifice engine life to do so(ie all the current Rx8 boosted kits)..... HMM i wonder what would happen if we stuffed a different 13b into the Rx8 chassis my personal favorite would be a s/c 13b after all in my Rx4 it will smoke my Rx8 in speed power and acceleration any day (just so long as i don't have to turn)

GJ28 give my your thoughts on this I am open to different ideas

from the front of the renny tranny to the middle of the shifter is right about 29". ~32" to the back of the shifter housing. not too too bad.

now this would suck for me because i'm big tall american and i think the shifters are too far forward anyway. but if you're 5'4" japanese guy, you'll probably be sitting at least a few inches closer to the pedals than i do, and it might be just fine for you. in any case, you could bend the shifter back a bit.

if you're going for a max power n/a motor without bridgeporting, renny rotors and a jumbo streetport is the way to go. actually, you could open the ports up enough to where it'd probably compete with a standard half-bridge motor.

like i said, i'm working on it. my proto's will be one set of s4 rotors, and one set of s5's. unfortunately, i only have one spare renny engine to share between them, so i'll have to test it, disassemble it, rebuild it with the other rotors, then test it again to get both results. PITA, and a lot of time.

funny you should mention using a different motor... i happen to have that exact project going on at this very moment. shhhhhhhh

That would almost be do-able. Do you know of any links to place where people have done a Renesis-to-s4/s5 swap? I'm am starting to seriously consider it.

haven't seen that one done yet, but when the cosmo goes in the 8, the renny will go into either an fb or fc. i'll do a writeup when i get it done, but that's months down the road.

how would the interfacing be with a swap of this sort? Like how hard would it be to convert to the renny ECU, Wiring harness, etc. It's the electrical stuff that worries me, and brackets that need to be made welded, drilled etc, i can do fairly easily.
