Release date for 16X engine?

Anyone here have any news on if or when the 16X engine will be released?

I've been thinking about buying an RX-8, but if the new engine will be out in a year or two I'll wait for that car instead.

Who knows? I bet only the big dog engineers in Hiroshima might have a clue as to when that would be.

If I were to take an educated guess though, I would bet that it won't be coming out until a completely new model (not just a re-style) RX-8 or other Mazda is released. One thing is for sure; chances are better now that Ford no longer has controlling interest in Mazda.

Lets hope so! With even Toyota saying that their situation is not very good, how's Mazdas?
I have not seen any salesfigures for Mazda for a while but let's hope they can ride out the bad times and come up with a new car and the 16X!

If they put it in the current 8 and call it a Mazdaspeed or something, I'm buying one for sure!

+1 im one of the few that digs the rx8s sproty 4 door design and a n/a 16x would probably be just as fun to drive as a 3rd gen

Seriously, that car is f-ugly. Those rears doors, C-pillar glass and rear windscreen kill the appearance. The 8 only looks good from the front doors forward and it absolutely needs the MAZDASPEED aero-kit to even look like a decent car.

It does have an awesome suspension, but the Renesis engine has way too little torque for a car that large. The only way I'd buy an RX-8 is at a massive discount or at the bottom of it's depreciation cycle, that's how much I hate the styling.

I'm not sure of Mazda' current sales figures, but I remember reading somewhere that their sales for the last several years have been on the upswing. Yeah, a lot of great cars might not get released due to a lousy economy. The new NSX to be made got the axe from Honda, the super-car Lexus LF-A most likely is canceled, and who knows what else? http://speedhunters.com/archive/2008...cancelled.aspx

The overall worldwide economy won't be getting any quick fixes either but I'm still optimistic because it weeds out the trendy crowd, newbies, phonies, non-hardcore car crowd, etc... you get my drift. Also, don't forget that when the first SA22 RX-7 (1st gen) was released in 1978 the economy was very dismal; pretty similar to current times. Mazda still managed to have a major success despite the grim economic state of the late 1970's.

I think that if Mazda returned to the original concept of the SA22 RX7 they could have another success. N/A rotary power, a lightweight chassis, and skip all the bells and whistles. The only thing fancy they should use is that new 16X and try to use almost everything else from the Mazda part's bin to keep costs as low as possible. Floor pan could be from RX8 or MX5 as could the suspension and misc. interior items like seats, gauges, climate control, etc. As much as I'd love another turbo rotary to be released I wouldn't advise it. The Mazda dealers here in the US are too greedy/incompetent and will warranty anything they think they can get away with. Just keep it NA for production cost, warranty reasons, owner maintenance costs and overall simplicity.

If Mazda is creative enough it could happen. Mazda always has been a very unique company that does things their own way so you never know!

This also leaves room for the aftermarket companies. When there is room for improvement, it encourages companies to get behind the brand/model. Lower initial cost also moves units. This helps the OEM and builds a better market size for the aftermarket.

Also, They need to sell the 16X as a crate motor. You should be able to purchase a long block from dealers and many other known rotary retailers. I bet you would see those things shoved in all sorts of stuff

I would prefer the 16x technology to be used in a 1.3 displacement.

As in, all aluminum 13b with direct injection and a lighweight car to match it. WOULD be way better that 16x gayward sideport.

The exact renesis engine BUT all aluminum, direct inj, and peri exhaust would be nice right?

Or, go back in time, shoot and kill the person who ever thought of putting the suicide doors on there. problem solved and cost efficient.

The suicide doors don't kill it per sey. It's the shape of the doors that make that damn "8" so ugly that I want to stab my eyes out with a fork.

Wouldn't be a Renesis if its Peripheral port there bud.

Also, i don't see what the deal is with the rx8 hate here, i think the suicide doors are kinda neat. The 8 was never meant to be another 7, you act like all rotary cars have to be full on 2 seater coupes. I'd love to have an 8 in addition to my 7 to drive around more than one friend.

I'm all for this new larger displacement motor. Mazda is putting in hard work and countless hours creating new rotary technology, you'd better be happy about it.

I just want to see rotary powered Miata from the factory. If that happens, I would have to pick one up. With either a Renesis or 16X.

Oooh, I really like the idea of a 16X crate motor. They might have to insist on the harness, controller, and OMP be retained for the sake of keeping warrantees intact, but that would be great. Since it's going back to the length of a 12A, imagine if they also had the forethought to cast and tap four holes at the bottom of the front cover.....

LOL. You are showing your love for the 12A a bit too much there Crit. I don't even want to know the cost of a 16X crate motor. Hell, the Renesis UIM alone was over 2k a few years ago.

Mazdaspeed Miata. Now equipped with the new 16X rotary engine!

Seriously though, that would be pretty awesome. I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

The MazdaSpeed Miata is one hell of a car. The one I drove was an absolute blast. I could not imagine a Miata with a Renesis, let alone a 16X. The thought makes me tight in the pantalones.

I don't have anything against the RX-8 really. I like the styling, and I like the idea of the rear doors. It makes the rear seats much more usefull than the torture chamber they call rear seats in my GXL.

Due to a lack of cash I probably wouldn't buy one, but I'd damn well be in line to test drive one. I've wanted to build a rotary miata for a while. What would be really cool is if Mazda came through with the plans to build a new RX-7 with the
16X. As long as they don't make it look too much like the concept drawings I've seen, I'd scrape the cash together to buy one.
