Refurbishing dash cap
Has anyone redone their dash cap? I have a 74 REPU and the dash cap/pad on the front edge is pretty beat up, the vinyl all cracked and foam pitted and missing in areas.
I’ve taken it to a few upholstery shops in town and no one really wants to touch it.
I saw some videos of people using that expanding spray foam and then sanding it down and wrapping it in fabric. Has anyone tried that? Or a better method?
Thanks

I ended up doing the spray foam method. Got a can of expanding spray foam and several grits of sandpaper. Sprayed foam into the cracks and craters , let it cure, then sliced off the excess with a razor. The foam has quiet a bit of air pockets or bubbles in it when dry, so I did another application of foam and repeated the previous steps. I then started with an 80 grit sanding sponge to knock it level and then smoothed it out with some 220 and then 320 grit.
Once I was happy it was smooth and level, I wrapped in some faux black suede. I also wrapped the metal dash cover that sits behind the dash cap in the same material. I am by no means good with fabric so there are some slight wrinkles or gathering, especially in corners, but for less than $60 for everything I'm pretty happy with the result.
