Rebuilding a Buggy for Autocross with 12A engine

Recently I bought a buggy based on a beetle chassis from a friend.

My plan is to modify it for 4 hours autocross races.

I’m racing only RX7s first generation with 12A engines, so that’s why I’ll install also a 12A engine on my buggy.

Pictures are following soon; I have to recharge the batteries of my old camera.

The first thing I did was to order an adapter kit for the 12A engine to the beetle gear box.

I found one at Kennedy Engineered Products in the USA.

They were very helpful by finding out the correct things that I need.
Very fast and cheep shipping to Europe too.
So that's why I profit here to thank Jodi and his crew for the great work they did.

Here is a picture of all that stuff:

Cool!
There doesn't seem to be much of the original beetle left...

Thats going to be a cool project! Does that cage really stick way out the back or does it just look strange because so much of the rear of the car is missing?

Yes the rear end looks a little bit strange.

I think there was a bigger water-cooled engine installed; you can still see a tube going from the back to the position where the water cooler was installed previously.

I’ll cut everything unnecessary off from the back and redesign it to make it smaller for the 12A engine.

I’ll post some pictures when I start working on the car.

As I have an autocross race the 19.04.2008, the first in this season, I’ll have to finish my autocross RX7 first.

Actually I’m just collecting things and ideas that I need for the buggy to start in one month (or so …).
I’ll post some pictures of these things too.
E.g.: Oil filter relocation, electric water pump, hydraulic clutch, and so on.

Today my new electric water pumps arrived from Australia.
2 x Davis, Craig EWP 110; one for my actual autocross vehicle and one for the buggy.

I tested one in my racing car on a 4 hour track race last season and decided to go on EWP for all my actual and future race cars.
As I don't want to break one of these pumps I'll make an exception for stock car, I think that this kind of race is too rude for the pump.

I’ll post some pictures later.

I just realized last week that the first autocross race for this season is on 12.04.2008.

That means:
1) I'll start rebuilding the buggy earlier.
2) I'll run out of time finishing my autocross car.
In fact I just found out 2 day ago, that the whole rear axle is bended due to the hard conditions of the last race in 2007.

I should open a treat called: Rebuilding my old autocross car instead, as there is still hell allot of work to do.
Just put some pictures of the autocross car in this tread to show you what I mean.

I'll keep you informed when I start with the buggy project.

And finally some pictures of the oil filter relocation kit.

I’ll build the plate to bypass the original oil filter by myself.

Just for your information:
The project has been reported to the end of this year, after the racing season 2008, as I have too much work to do on my other race cars.
