Fired up!!

Thanks to everyone for all their inputs!! Got my car fired up yesterday. It was just the igniter connections all mixed up. I am pleased with how it idles so far. Even at cold start the motor idles very smooth. Now on to the timing and test drive.....

To bring this back from the dead.....

Am I to understand what Jeff is saying that a gutted leading J109 is not necessary, just a connection is needed there???

Also, in Migz post #22/TulsaTurbo's diagram, all of that is correct except for B being positive and C being negative?

I am finally getting around to wiring all of this up on this 2nd gen TII. All of this electornic BS is kicking my butt. I've pulled the engine harness and ECU and had to wire lots of other things. I guess that's what I get for wanting to be different....(87 TII, S5 BNR Stage 3 turbo, Rotary Shack Weber DCOE blow through, FMIC, custom fuel system using A1000 pump and cell, etc...).

Any input will be much appreciated.

DFIS electronic ignition Rx3 rx7

I just ripped my leading ignitor out and used the red and green wires to trigger my MSD box. Ignitors fail. That's why wacky collects them I bet.

MSD = multi spark discharge. Instead of 1 spark, it sends a blast of 5 or so.

I've convinced myself that it's still sparking when the trailing ignition would've sparked. So I just got rid of all the clutter of the trailing sys and tossed it. I left the trailing plugs in the block for conversation pieces.

I love the look on peoples' faces when I pop my hood. They first see the plugs with no leads, then the distrib cap with no leads. Then they see the coils directly connected to leading plugs.

I've done tests (1/4 mile) and saw no benefit to keeping the trailing system - other than having some spare parts near the engine if the ignition system flakes on me.

This is a "wasted spark" scenario because it's firing both coils (and rotors) at the same time. Only one rotor is on it's power stroke at the right time though.

Sorry, that was sort of long.

If you have a burnt ignitor, then gut it; otherwise, you can hook the MSD's green and purple wires directly to dizzy's green and red using male connectors and such BUT it wont have a stock look.

Jeff doesnt approve gutting a good ignitor since he doesnt have enough supply like some people like me lol

Ugh! I'm getting no spark and my MSD Blaster coils are getting very hot (almost too hot to touch) after about 30 seconds. I'm shutting down for the weekend and get back on it tomorrow. If I can't figure the stuff out, I'll post pics with a complete description.

With the coils getting so hot, it appears that I have something hooked up backwards, mainly the + and -. Any suggestions from you experts?

I've checked everything about 4 times now and according to all of the diagrams above, TulsaTurbos, and about 80 threads (j/k), it appears that I have everything wired correctly. My coils are getting very hot and quickly. As though the wires are crossed. I've tried switching them and it made no difference. The only thing that I didn't change/try was switching B and C. My B is connected to + and C is connected to -.

I clipped the wires at the distributor, hard wired in connectors, ran the wiring over to DR100 ignitors, into the coils and leading coils went to the plugs, trailing went to the cap with those wires to the plugs. Post 22/Illustration 1 above is what I have except no gutted ignitors..just straight wiring.

Anyone???

Edit: I do have the coils grounded to the negative terminal post (I have relocated the battery to the storage bins and have distribution blocks for + and -. Should I just disconnect the ground wire from the terminal block to the coils? (I'll go try it at least).

VICTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!! I disconnect the ground wires coming from the negative battery terminal block and voila......we have ignition! Coils remain cool as well.

Fuel system, some intake manifold modifying, and me and my son will soon be trying to fire this thing off.
