but that was forever ago....

Um... maybe they've been built, but not for public consumption at least.

You can however, convert one. It's somewhere in the first-gen forums. Do a search. IIRC it involves a 4wd B2xxx middle diff and the front transaxle off a 626 and a LOT OF MONEY.

How badly do you want it?

IMHO you should stick to Subies (Subaru) for awd

ive never heard of one, but only the ones that have been custom built, but that i know of i have never heard mazda build one...good luck finding one if u do though

mazda built one ... it was going to be the replacement for the rwd group B car

the mazda 4WD group B car was a triple rotor, came about as ford had developed the RS200. millen also built a gen 2 s4 4WD for pikes peak. millen gen 1 s2 utilised front wheel drive 626 components you could always hit them up for info if your polite. a pre rx7 4WD rotor would make for a very interesting vehicle if you have the funds.

Talk to millen,quaife and maybe a gtx for some parts

There was a more in depth article online about an rx7 awd when I was researching for a gtx to go rotary..
