In the last four weeks I have had my impacted wisdom teeth extracted, my son brought me home some horrible plague from his school, and my wife had our second child . Needless to say, I haven't got a lot done on the sube, the 25in record November snowfall didn't help either.

I made some clearance in the tranny tunnel for the larger (and significantly higher) rx tranny. The subaru gearbox hangs everything below the input shaft line, while the rx box is pretty much in line.

I fabbed up a motor mount/cradle for the front.

I lowered the Subaru front subframe ~2in to get the motor lower in the chassis. This also has the side effect of improving the camber curve, and giving an extra 1-2 degrees of neg camber if I need it. In the spring i will be swapping in the matching legacy front suspension, but that parts car is under several feet of snow now.

It is now a rwd scooby! Good work Issac. And I for one am glad your doing all this yourself- on a budget. Its how we learn! and Its also how we can be proud when its all done.. and if it doesn't work out first time we learn from mistakes, change things, progress. Anyone thinking 'oh I'd love to beable to make stuff like that" I say just go out and have a go- nothing to loose- lots to gain.

good work- i'm watching this one.

Btw - is it a gassless mig you are using? - lots of brown residue around welds.

It is now EA series coupes only came from the factory as FWD, even though they share the same floor pan as the 4wd EA cars. I have converted others to 4wd using subaru parts, but this one is going to see a lot more abuse, so it gets upgrades

Yep, flux core MIG. Not the nicest or best by any means, but it gets the job done, and is portable.

Great build with pics.

That isnt a "harbor freight" wire welder is it? If so how you do you like welding with it and what wire are you running?

Not a harbor freight, it is an older Campbell Hausfeld. I have a friend who loves his harbor freight welder, but I am used to mine so I try not to use it.

I typically use Lincoln innershield wire because it seems to hold a bead better than the cheaper stuff. I have been acquiring everything to run gas MIG, and now I just need a bottle. Unfortunately it isn't in the budget for this build.

I will try to get some pics posted in the next few days, I whipped up a tranny mount out of a piece of steel I found in the road , and just finished the trailing links for the rear suspension. I need to fab up a diff snout mount and she is a rolling chassis again.

Is this still a project? I used to mess with those old Subies all the time, I'm curious about how this ends up.

The latest time sucker was building a new motor for my dd legwag, it suffered a catastrophic failure(but got a high comp frankenmotor in return)

Back to the rotary sube! :headbang:

I whipped up a tranny mount out of some scrap I had, it uses the stock rx rubber mount, and provides a nice spot to route the exhaust as well

The stock legacy trailing arms fit towards the outside of the legacy body, which is significantly wider than the little leone coupe. The centerline of the legacy stuff was about even with the leone pinch weld, they also have a goofy "S" curve to clear the wheel tire.

Having stacks of rx parts is a bonus, and the lower rx7 trailing link is a perfect fit for the inside of the subaru arm. I fabbed up mounts for the body end that bolt to the stock coupe torsion bar mount, and are sized for rx trailing link bushings. With some measurements and a quick jig (not pictured), I whipped up hybrid trailing arms.

The other two torsion bar mount hole will hold the diff snout carrier, which is the next project.

Haha wow, that Legacy motor is ******* toast. What did you put in to replace it? Also that is a great idea for the trailing arms; can't wait to see this finished.

It is not finished yet, but I have done a bit more work. Life happens and projects get put aside, I am hoping to get back to it this summer.

first off awesome project! combining my two favorites car companies. I have been day dreaming about a similar project. first do you know how similar the leone trans tunnel is to newer impreza or outback? I'm wondering if it will be absolutely necessary to hack the tunnel to fit the rx7 trans. also are you running into problems with space for the radiator + fans?
