ignition

I have a REPU that I put a 13b from an '86 RX7 into. Currently it is running an electronic ignition from about an '84 RX7 with a 12a. For the most part it seems ok but there are a few things that just don't work right like the vaccuum advance. I was wondering how much work it would be to pull the ignition system from a 2nd gen and use that in the REPU. Does the ignition system require the ECU? Or would it be no more than pull the sensor from the front cover, and get the coils? I haven't had time to get to the wrecking yard to look myself, maybe next weekend.
thanks.

Hey, that looks quite easy. Maybe an hour or 2 job? I have that Uncle Buck backfiring problem that you mentioned, it goes away if the timing is advanced but then preignition is a bad thing. I think I will make a trip to the junk yard and try the DLIDFIS and see if that cures the backfiring for me. I think I will bookmark that page so I can find it when I get my REPU back in Feb.
thanks

Cool! Do you have an internal regulated alt? I got mine from an '81 or '82 RX-7. It fits good and is rated at 50 amps. It works perfectly with the REPU's stock 50 amp fusible link. It allowed me to remove my voltage regulator (as mentioned in the article).

My reason for asking is because I read something somewhere which said it is a good idea to switch to a newer alt when installing electronic ignition. I've seen it done both ways, but the RX-7 alt always works better.

Hmm, I really don't know for certain which alternator is in there. When I bought the REPU it had a dead 12a in it, I assumed it came from an rx7 but I really don't know for sure. I will have to check that out. It looks really old though so I will probably end up replacing it just as a precaution. I will put in an rx7 alt because that does make sense. I won't have my REPU back until Feb 25 so no way to check yet

Currently in my REPU I have a 13b but I am using the electronic distributor from an '84 rx7 12a. I don't know about your ignition setup but the 1st gen ignition setup has the ignitors attached to the distributor. It is a very simple ignition to use. Just grab a dizzy. and 2 coils. run some wire and it is done. I am going to try our the DLIDFIS that 20B posted a link to, it sounds like a great system.

I haven't posted any pics of any installations yet, but there is a basic wiring diagram at the top of the page on the DLIDIFIS link.
