Question How much is my RX-4 worth?

I've found that a lot of the early rotary parts vendors will try to convince you that parts for those cars are worth their weight in gold. However, on Ebay most things don't seem to go for crazy amounts of money. they sell pretty reasonably in my view. Even whole cars seem to get a ho-hum response.

So I'm wondering how much you guys think my RX-4 is worth in it's present state. It's mostly straight, is 99% complete, has an 80% nice interior (cracked dash and small tears in drivers seat detract from it), has wrong 12A in it of unknown condition, is largely rust free (spare tire well has holes, body doesn't, floors solid). Most of you have seen pics of it here:
RX4 pics I have all the parts you don't see in the pics, like the interior stuff and grille and trim.

Appraisers, anyone? I wanna know if I got a decent deal...also I may sell if I can't get my act together with a restoration plan.

Do you want to restore or make a drag car? This one is too good in my opinion to make a drag car.

no offence....but because it is a rx4....i would not pay more than about $800 for it.
the real value of the car depends on the demand of it. the rx4 is the least sought after of them. so whatever someone is willing to pay determaines the value

in your opinion it is too nice to make a drag car...in my opinion it is the WRONG car to make a drag car.

Wouldn't you say the RX-5 is EVEN LESS sought after than the RX-4 (though not by me, I'd almost prefer a cosmo)? I also agree that the RX-4 is not the one to go drag racing with...but hey, we've seen it done, so whatever floats someone's boat...

I think I'm gonna keep the car. I have access to all the neccessary facilities and tools for restoring it, so i'm gonna take advantage of it and get the thing fixed up.
I was just having trouble deciding whether I wanted to spend more money, or make a little money.

projectsupra, I hope you find what you're looking for.

No, i think the RX-4 still makes a good drag car.. but not compared to a R100, RX-2, RX-3...

They are king ****

Someone posted a RX-4 the other day that was doing 9s in the 1/4 mile..

I'd rather have a Cosmo over an RX-4

Well i think with a new paint job it would be worth more of course and it would look a lot better. But since it is 12a which is not what originaly powered it and it is a 4. I would say that with that motor and a good paint job it could fetch between 800-1500. I know someone that realy likes the 4's just because of the way they look and so on. I think there are others out there like him also and to the right person they would pay that much for kind of a project to make it more original and so on.

A genuinely good paint job is about $1500-2500 just by itself. That's why I'm doing everything on my own!
But I do think the RX-4 is the best looking out of the pre-RX-7 US-spec rotaries. I do wish they hadn't gone all pseudo-Roccoco on the tail lights though.

Hi there

Judging from the pics taken in the wrecking yard, I'd have offered them $400. It's worth at least $800 right now being in the condition you say it's in, but if you repainted it, got everything sorted out mechanically, restored/repaired/replaced what you could and maybe put the correct engine back in, I'd say it's worth $2500 to $3000. more if it's got "go-fast" parts on it . . .

I paid $800 for my 73 RX-2 with 62000 original miles. The guy wanted $1200 but I talked him down. It was on the way to the horse pasture to rot away.

Anyway, that's just my $0.02

Here's my RX-2:

Nope, just the yellow RX-2 and a blue Jeep.

Hi antiSUV,

How did you go selling your RX4?

Don't let anyone tell you an RX4 isn't suitable for Drag Racing down here in Australia we have quite a few running 10's & 11's down the quarter. Mine has actually ran 9.79 @ 141Mph (13B turbo, Supra N/A box & 9' diff) all done by Anthony Rodrigues at MAZTECH in Melbourne as mentioned by zyounker.

Vito.

You have a nice starting point for a project car. Not only is it an RX-4, but a 74-74 model. The front fenders and 3 part front bumper appear to be in good shape. These were the parts I had problems finding. If you need any parts as you get further along let me know. I have two (1 1/2 really) of these cars and parts from a third. The driveable one is used every day to take the kids to school. The other donated its mint interior to the cause. You can see the better of the two at:

I'm keeping the RX-4...I found a motor for it finally and right now I'm just trying to find parts and things.

Your car is really cool...that's an amazingly nice interior you have there. I did get lucky enough to have nice seats and headliner, but there are some other issues... There's a good possibility I'll e-mail you eventually asking for advice or to see if you have some parts to sell. thanks.

Damn! my parts car must be worth a fortune! In the past I've bought RX3s for $40.00, an RX2 for $150, a nice '74 RX4 coupe body for $300, and was recently given a one-owner '80 RX7 for free. The $40.00 RX3 had a factory-rebuild '74 single distributor motor with 17K on it. I guess I'll have to go ****** up the couple of R-100s I've had scoped out for years. Oh, and the Rotary pickup, too. I think I can get it for $150 bucks.
