How many miles were the stock rx-2 engines good for? My dad said he had 230,000 miles on his before he replaced the motor, but I thought the 12A out of the rx-2 had major reliabity problems, and didnt they use 6MM carbon apex seals?

 

They did, and they ran for maybe 40k and then needed new apex seals. I have one of these engines which I'd like to convert over to '83-'85 rotors for the lightest rotating assembly and 3mm carbon apex seals. I shouldn't use iron seals because the chrome on early rotor housings wouldn't last very long with them. I'm also going to have to slot the top-mounted starter a little and use a light steel flywheel. A stock '83-'85 flywheel will not fit an early engine due to a bellhousing diameter which is too small. I think a stock '82 or older flywheel might fit this early engine, but it would require earlier (heavier) rotors.

 

2 of the rx2's that i had went well over 80,000 miles
one made it to 100,000 and i drove them hard!

I must say that by the time they made it to these kind of miles they were burning
a lot of oil.

 

My dad's got 40K before it went out. My RX-2 went about 40K on a factory rebuild (original style 12A) and it went 40K before the single oil seal went out . . . .
